Title Ndang si (The spirit of a woman who died in childbirth) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a couple in a village. They loved each other so much. As a soldier, he had to fight in a war. At that time, his wife was pregnant. When his wife was about to give birth, he had to go to fight in a war. His wife said, "Don't go!" But he said, "As a soldier, I gave my word to my friends to fight in a war. So, I have to go however." Then, he went out together with his friends. He had to fight severely in a war. His friends were dying one after one. He was scared because he was the only one left in his group. So, he hid all the time. He could barely escape and went back home. He escape from the danger. On the other hand, his wife was alone and about to give birth. She hired a midwife to help her in giving birth. But she couldn't give birth successfully and died while giving birth. That old midwife took the girl's wedding ring out and kept it. Meanwhile, the husband was coming back home since he lost in the war. His dead wife turned into a big snake and waited for him in the river where he had to cross. Actually, she was dead because she couldn't give birth successfully. She became a snake and waited for her husband. The husband rode a boat and went back home. Then, he got home. But she was waiting for him in the river. When she heard her husband was at home, she quickly went back home and turned into a human. And she pretended like she had a baby. She put the baby in the cot and stood beside it. At that time, her husband got home. She was afraid if the villagers would tell her husband that she was already dead. So, she haunter the villagers a lot. The villagers were so scared and they all ran away from the village. So, the husband didn't know that his wife was dead. She deceived her husband's sight. Her husband saw everything as normal. Actually, there were only webs. There were only spider webs in the cot. And the baby was not real too. But he couldn't see those things and just lived there happily. All the villagers ran away from the village and lived in the other places. One day, the husband went to find some woods. He went into the forest to collect some woods. There, he met with some villagers who ran away from the village since his wife haunted them so much. They told him about his wife. (They told him.) (They told him.) When they said to him about his wife, he didn't believe and replied to them, "No! My wife is not dead yet. We even talk to each other. She is not dead." The wife knew who told her husband about her. Then, she haunted that person and killed by wind. She also killed the midwife who took her wedding ring off. And she took that ring back. She showed that ring to her husband to prove that she was his wife. The husband was suspicious of his wife because he heard that whoever told him about her died one after another. But he didn't dare to ask his wife. Sometimes, he tried to ask her about that. He asked his wife, "Are you really human?" She said, "What kind of nonsense are you talking about?" Then, he didn't ask that kind of question anymore since he loved her so much. The other people said, "Your wife is not human anymore. If you want to prove that, bend your upper body and look from that position, then you will see." But he couldn't look at his wife. He was afraid that his wife was not human anymore. So, he couldn't do that. One day, he visited his neighbours' houses. But no one was there. He was surprised. Then he just went back home. When he stepped on the stair, it was broken. To fix it, he took a hammer and some nails. He lifted his butt a bit and repaired the ladder. At that time, their house swayed to one side and his wife who was pounding some chilli paste in the kitchen dropped the tomato. He saw that his wife picked that tomato up by her long tongue. But he didn't dare to ask his wife. While he was repairing the ladder, he saw his wife's long tongue. And he saw that one of her hands was pounding some chilli in the kitchen and another hand was rocking the cradle. Then, he felt suspicious of his wife. So, he looked at his wife from between his legs. He saw that his wife was Nat Num (ghost or evil spirit). He was extremely frightened. At first, he called his friends to visit his house. At that time, his wife treated his friends to some caterpillars, black ants and worms. Since his friends were just normal and couldn't get deceived by his wife, they saw those food just as caterpillars and worms. And they could see that the baby was not real, and it was just leaves and web. But the husband looked after that child. He didn't know that his wife was feeding him caterpillars and worms. And he ate those. When he said to his friends to eat some food, they said that they didn't eat those kinds of food. Now, he had a vague memory of those. He looked at his wife from between his two legs and knew that she was Nat (evil spirit). He was so scared as he loved her so much. He knew that Nat and human couldn't live together. So, he ran away from her. But she kept chasing him too. She said, "We had been living together. Why are you running now?" And she kept following him. He didn't know how to do. Then, he arrived at the monastery compound. The monk gave them a sermon. The monk stopped her not to be able to come into the compound. She kept following him because she loved him so much. He said, "We couldn't live together anymore. Let's meet in the next existence." The next day, the other people showed him where his wife's grave was. And they called the wife and made sure that her soul would be buried with her body. The wife never haunted people anymore. This is the end of the story.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
