Title Danai na Hkamti Sam a labau (History of the Hkamti Shan people in Danai) with English translation
Description Translation (Htoi San)
I am telling a story about the Kumde Shan tribe who lived in Kachin State in Danai Muklung Town, Hugawng Township. Next to Danai Muklung, there was Munghawm land. Long ago, the Kumde Shan stayed in the Munghawm area. In ancient times, Kumde Shan and Kachin people lived in Danai Town, Hugawng land, and many Munghawm Shan stayed in Danai Town. Dinghkun Lake was situated next to Danai Town. There was a ward named Dinghkun ward until now. In the Dinghkun lake, an age-old dragon was inhabited. The old dragon took, dragged, and ate humans every year. People tried to trap it to kill, but they could not catch the dragon. Although they trapped it and hunted for it, many people had been lost as time passed. One day, people asked for divination and asked the spirits about how they could catch that dragon. The people got an answer: if they made a trap with a nine-year-old hog, they could get the dragon. One man from the village used the nine-year-old hog to trap the dragon, and he could get the dragon. He could trap and get the dragon, but he could not kill it; he did not know how to kill it and did not see a way to kill it. Although he shot with a gun and thrust with a sword, he could not terminate it. We could see many Jangji plants in the Hugawng district, and they grew near water. They looked like sugarcane plants, but they were harder. We used the Jangji stems to trap many fish in a lake. The villagers cut the Jangji stems slantwise. After that, they threw them straight with force and thrust them into the pond where the dragon lived. Only then could they kill the dragon. People like Munghawm Shan, Kumdi Shan, and other Shans who lived in the Hugawng Land before could terminate the dragon with the Jangji stems and hurl them into the dragon; they cut the dragon skin into three or four inches and five inches. From there on, we heard that they shared the dragon skin pieces with every household. If the people were the real Kumji Shan from Hugawng land, they all kept the dragon skin pieces in their families. We got to know about this from our ancestors from Hugawng land. In recent days, many Kumji people from Hugawng land lived at Loi Seng Ga in the Kamai district and Mai Sak Wang in the Mogaung district. They prevailed in these areas. Many Kumji people who made relatives with the Kachin people in Hugawng land were the descendants of the ancient Kumji people who killed the dragon. I heard this story and wanted to tell it.
