Title Dinggai lahkawng a lam (Warm or cold?) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell is about two women. Once upon a time, there were two women. They were farming on each mountain. There was a river between two mountains where they were working. They were always together when they slept or were going back. They were always together. One evening, the woman from this side thought, "I thought to sleep here at first, but I can't sleep here tonight. I can't shout her name in the evening in the forest because there are many evil spirits. What shall I do?" Then she just went back home without calling her friend. She went back home. The other woman thought her friend would come to her to sleep, so she kept waiting for her. It seemed like she was not thoughtful. At night, she called her friend, "My friend! My friend!" She said, "Come to this side!" But her friend was not there. Her friend had already gone back home. However, she kept calling, "My friend! My friend!" Then she heard the reply, "Yes! Yes!" She said, "Let's sleep here with me tonight. Come to this side." The reply was, "Okay, I will come to that side. I will come to you." She also replied, "Okay. As we are going to sleep here tonight, let's cook something for dinner. Pick some pumpkin leaves and come to this side." In fact, the reply was from Hpau Lum Htu, an evil spirit. Hpau Lum Htu said, "Okay, I will pick some pumpkin leaves. Wait for me there." She gave the reply. Soon, Hpau Lum Htu came to the woman after picking some leaves. In the past, nats could change their appearance to look like humans. Hpau Lum Htu came to her. She put the leaves on her hair and went to the woman. As soon as the woman saw Hpau Lum Htu, she instantly knew that she was not her friend. She was scared, but she tried to keep calm and said, "Let's cook dinner, my friend." After cooking dinner, they ate it together. While they were eating, the woman was smart enough, so she quickly burned the copper bracelets on fire. She told her, "I make a bed for you here. After you have finished your dinner, go to bed first." Hpau Lum Htu was just sleeping soundly with a wide, open mouth. At that moment, the woman picked up her copper bracelets from the fire and put them into Hpau Lum Htu's mouth. When she put them in her mouth, Hpau Lum Htu was shouting because she was seriously hurt. Then the woman ran to the village. She requested everything on the way, "If a woman asks me, please say you don't see me." She requested everyone and everything not to tell Hpau Lum Htu about her. Then she arrived home. She even told the ladder not to say a word about her. Unfortunately, she forgot to request a mortar. She forgot to request it. She went into the house and lay in the middle of people. She tried to sleep there. Soon, Hpau Lum Htu chased her. She was looking for her, but everyone said they didn't see her. However, the mortar said, "She went into the house just now." Hpau Lum Htu went into the house and touched everyone's feet and said, "Warm! Cold! Warm! Cold!" Then she pulled the cold feet away and killed that person.
