Title Grai Tsaw Ra Hkat Ai Yan Nau | Brotherly Love
Description Translation (Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
This is the tale of “Brotherly Love.” Long ago, a mother lived with her two sons. They also kept two donkeys at home. One day, when the mother passed away, the brothers divided the donkeys between them, and each set off toward a different land. As they traveled, the elder brother found himself in a country suffering from famine, where food was scarce and the people were tormented by hunger. Meanwhile, the younger brother arrived in a land of great wealth. After some time, the younger brother sent his elder brother a single needle, carried by a crow. When the elder brother received the needle, he thought, "Ah, my brother must care for me so deeply," "as if a needle were piercing his own heart." Later on, the younger brother sent another message by crow—this time, a ball of thread. When the elder brother received the thread, he thought, "This must mean that our hearts" "are tied together by an unbroken thread." Wishing to tell his brother about the famine, the elder brother filled a bag with empty rice husks and sent it by crow. When the younger brother received the husks, he understood, "My brother's land must be struck by famine," "and he must be suffering from hunger." So the younger brother asked the king for permission to go and bring his brother back, and the king agreed. The younger brother brought the elder home to his prosperous land, and the two brothers lived happily together.
