This is the tale of “The Dragon Who Became a Man.” Long, long ago, there lived a dragon. The dragon wished to know how human beings lived, so one day, he made up his mind, took on the form of a man, and came to a nearby village. When he reached the village, he visited the home of a widow and her daughter, fell in love with the daughter, married her, and before long, they had a child. As the days went by, the dragon in human form would sometimes leave the house, walk down to the river, visit his dragon mother, receive gold from the riverbed, sell it in town, and soon became very wealthy. Because the family lived in comfort without doing any work, the villagers grew suspicious and decided to follow him. One day, they saw him receiving gold from his dragon mother in the river, and they learned the truth: the man was really a dragon. So the villagers went to his wife and told her, “Your husband is not a human." "He is a dragon.” But the wife refused to believe them. Then the villagers said, "If you doubt us," "the next time he goes out," "follow him and see for yourself." Still unsure, the wife listened to their advice, and one day, when her husband left home, she followed him quietly, making sure he would not notice. She saw him go straight to the river and beg his dragon mother for gold. She was utterly shocked, and when she hurried toward him, her husband also noticed her. Overcome with shame, he returned to his true dragon form, slipped into the river, and never came back again.
