Title Sha Lawa Hte Nyan Rawng Ai La Kasha | The Ogre and the Clever Boy
Description Translation (Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe)
This is the story of “The Ogre and the Clever Boy.” Long ago, a man-eating ogre came to a quiet little village. He sat down at the entrance of the village and frightened the villagers. The villagers were so terrified that they had no choice but to obey the ogre. The ogre said to them, “Tomorrow, bring me fresh milk.” "If you don't," "I will eat your children." So the villagers milked their cows and left the milk where the ogre stayed. The next morning, when the ogre awoke, he drank up all the milk the villagers had left for him and went back to sleep. When he woke again, the ogre said to the villagers, "Tomorrow, I want chicken to eat." "Catch your chickens" "and give them to me." "If you don't," "I will strangle all of your children." Terrified by his threats, the villagers caught all their chickens and left them for the ogre. When morning came, the ogre ate the chickens the villagers had brought and went back to sleep under a tree root. When he woke again, the ogre said once more, "Tomorrow, I want pork." "Kill your pigs" "and leave the meat for me." "If you refuse," "I will burn down your houses." Trembling, the villagers killed their pigs and fed the ogre again. The next day, the ogre demanded, "Tomorrow, I want beef." "Bring it to me." "If you don't," "I will smash all of your belongings." Frightened, the villagers slaughtered their cows and fed the ogre. When the ogre awoke, he ate the beef the villagers had left and went back to sleep again. Then he said he wanted sticky rice, and he threatened the villagers once more, so they steamed sticky rice and fed him. Next, the ogre said, "Tomorrow, I want honey to drink." "If you don't bring it," "I will beat you all to death with this spiked club!" Terrified, the villagers went into the forest to look for honey. One boy from the village went off on his own, thinking, "This ogre has caused too much trouble in our village." "We can't keep giving in to his threats." As he wandered, he found a beehive with no honey inside. When he returned to the village, the other villagers who had searched everywhere found no honey, and they stood there in despair. The boy said, "Don't worry." "Tomorrow I will bring the honey the ogre asked for." The villagers listened to what he said. The next morning, when the ogre awoke, he was furious to find no honey waiting. He swung his club and came to strike the villagers, but the boy called out, "Hey, Ogre! I've brought you the honey you wanted." "Fresh honey," "straight from the hive." "Here, open it and drink!" And he placed the hive, filled only with bees, in front of the ogre. The ogre, eager for honey, smashed the hive with his club to get it out. At once, the bees swarmed and stung the ogre fiercely one bye one. Crying out in pain, the ogre ran away. The bees chased after him as he fled. The ogre ran deep into the forest and never showed himself in the village of men again. From that day on, the villagers lived peacefully once more.
