The title of the story is "The Woman Who Eats Corpses." Once upon a time, there was a man in a village. He married a beautiful woman. She was a gorgeous lady. He loved her so much. He didn't let her work and provided her with everything. He let her stay at home without working. Her parents-in-law adored her because of her beauty. They had been married for five years, but they still didn't have a child. They had a child once, but the baby died not long after he was born. Mysteriously, the woman always disappeared around midnight on the day a corpse was buried. She came back to her house when the rooster crowed the next morning. She went back to her house at that time. When she came back home at the time the rooster crowed, she went straight to the toilet. She threw up everything in the toilet. After throwing up, she went into the bedroom. She smelled really bad, like something rotten or decayed. Her husband had long observed the foul smell surrounding her. He wanted to find out what the real cause was. He wanted to find out why she had that unpleasant smell. One day, there was a funeral in their village. The corpse was buried that night. That night, the man told his wife, "My wife, I love you so much. I have always taken care of you and loved you as my wife until today. I believe you know that. Others said that if a married couple ties their hands while they are sleeping, they will always be together, even across many lifetimes." He made her sleep in that way. He tied his hand to his wife's hand and slept through the whole night. He did it because he wanted to know when his wife got up. That night, they went to bed at the same time. Around midnight, the wife got up and went out. She got up around midnight. The moment she got up, her husband woke and became aware of her movements. So he got up and followed her secretly. He wanted to know what his wife was going to do, so he followed her. The wife had completely forgotten that she and her husband had tied their hands while sleeping. She had completely forgotten about that. After she got up, she went to the kitchen and picked up the firesticks. She slapped her left cheek three times, and her right cheek three times. Then her mouth became sharp and pointed. After that, she beat her hands three times each. And she beat her legs three times each. Then the nails on her fingers and toes grew longer. She grew wings on her back. She had that kind of thing. All the windows and doors were closed, but she still went outside. She didn't remember how she had gotten out of the house. Both of them went outside. The wife took off her clothes, hung them at the door, and went outside. Since her hands were tied to her husband's, he followed her. On her way, she had to cross the big river. She didn't cross it using the bridge. She didn't take him across the river by the bridge. Her husband was scared. He thought, "How is she going to cross it? It's impossible for a human to cross this deep river. How is she going to do?" He was scared, but he kept following her. When they arrived at the river, she picked him up and held him in her arms. And she crossed the river. There was a cemetery on the other side of the river. She put him down when they arrived. And she scratched the fresh grave that had been buried today. Then she opened the coffin and ate the decayed flesh of the corpse. She ate until she was full. When they got back home, she beat her hands on the ground three times. Then all her long nails disappeared. On their way back home, she carried her husband across the river. When they got back home, she beat her hands on the ground three times. Then all her nails returned to normal. After that, she touched her mouth. Then her mouth returned to normal, as it had been before. After that, she went straight to the toilet and threw up everything. And she wore her clothes and walked into the house. She acted as if nothing had happened and went to sleep on the bed. The husband was scared to death. The next morning, while his wife was away, he told his parents, "Mom and Dad, your daughter-in-law is not human! She is not a human! Last night, she took me to where she was going. She is the ghoul who eats corpses!" He told them about her. He said, "It looks like she ate our newborn baby." He told his parents about her. He continued, "Don't tell anyone about this issue, Mom and Dad. Let's send her away. Let's send her back to where she came from, following the tradition." But the parents spoke about her without discretion. Later, they died because of what they had said. The husband died, too. Later, the villagers sent the wife back to her parents' house.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of a community-based collaborative fieldwork project in northern Myanmar. As of January 9, 2026, the collection includes 2,491 stories, 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,774 translations.


Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Translations were prepared by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
