Once upon a time, a hunter who was brilliant at shooting crossbows lived in a village. The villagers were jealous of him for his talent. Therefore, they planned to kill him. As they thought of an idea, Near their village, there was a cave where the wind hole was. They went to cut crops and placed them in the pothole. The village men told him, "Let's go hunting one day. You are the best hunter, and you know how to shoot crossbows very well. When we are surrounding the prey, you come out and shoot it." Then they let him wait near the wind hole from the cave. The villagers shouted from the side. Due to their shouting, from the wind hole of the cavity where they put their crops, the air blew and made a sound like “Sawk Sawk Sawk.” They told him, “Now, shoot faster! Gash quickly! Kill speedily!” The hunter thought it was the time, and he jumped out of place. As a result, he fell into the pit. He slipped to the ground and he found a realm (gatsan ga) where people were tiny. They cut down the roots of trees with axes, and they made a ladder to pick the chilis and eggplants. The hunter used his hands to pick those. But the tiny people in that country had to use the axes to cut down the plants, which he pulled and broke all those plants. Therefore, people from the tiny world did not like him. "This man just breaks the trees with his bare hands when we need to cut down with all of our efforts. If it is so, he will kill us later. We should send him off faster," said the little people. At that time, his friends, who were jealous of him and assassinated him from his world, told his wife about him. Thus, his wife went to the pit hole where he fell into and cried. She cried there all the time. As she constantly moaned there, she saw a big hole at the edge of the pit hole when the crops dried as time went by. His wife collected the seeds of creepers and poured them into that big hole. As a result, the seeds went into the ground. The creeper vines grew like a ladder. The vines increased like a ladder and steps. The creepers grew up bigger and bigger. In the tiny realm, little people did not like the hunter. He just smashed worms and caterpillars with his bare hands. He punched and killed them. The little men needed to use guns and javelins to finish those insects. He just destroyed the animals quickly. Therefore, the people from the other world did not fancy him. They wanted to send him back to his world. They brought him passing one by one. They sent him until he got to where he first dropped in. When he reached there, he found a tree root that was flat, wide, and long. It went up like a ladder up to the hole. He climbed upon it. So, he reached the earth. When he got there, he observed the place. A dove cooed at the top of a tree. When his wife heard that dove’s cooing, she went there and cursed these words, “E! if my husband listened to this cooing sound, even if it is the soul of my beloved, my life partner, please make a cooing sound again.” She said something like this. Then the dove cooed again for real. As the hunter heard the cooing sound, he climbed up to the place of sound. He was climbing up, and the dove was making its sound, so his wife said, “E e dove, please make the cooing sound again, if this is the spirit of my beloved husband. Please make a coo for one more time.” So the dove made a sound again. That man heard the sound of a dove, and his wife, he went up and saw his wife was there alone. “Who are you?” When he asked the lady, she answered, “I am the wife of the hunter Ma Gam.” She replied this to him. Only then that man came down from the creeper vine. In the end, he went back with his wife, and they lived together.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
