Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell is about a strong man. Once upon a time, there was a couple in a village. The wife was pregnant. Although it was due, she couldn't give birth. It was already one year, but she couldn't give birth yet. Two years after she was pregnant, she gave birth to a baby. As soon as he was born, he said, "Mom, I'm so hungry. Feed me." So, the mother fed him a bowl of rice. But he said, "Mom, I am not full yet. Feed me more." After eating two bowls of rice, he asked his mother, "Mom, where did Dad go?" She said, "Your father is on his way to cut the bamboo to carry some water." He said, "Then, I will go to him." When he arrived there, he was searching for his father by name. When he found his father, he said, "I am your son." The father was surprised because a newborn baby could find him and talk to him. After cutting some bamboos, the newborn baby said, "Dad, you don't have enough strength to carry these bamboos. Let me carry them." He bound four or five bamboos and carried them by himself. Then, they went back home. His parents were surprised and talked about their son to the neighbours. His news was spread to the king, the rich and everyone. The king and the rich men were shocked and discussed, "The baby is so strong. He can be a threat to us when he gets older. We should kill him." The king said, "If we kill him, we will get punished. So, we will not lay a hand on him. I will order him to go ask nine gallons of gold from Hpyi Hpai Dinggai (an old witch). She will kill him as soon as he enters her place." The king called the boy and ordered him, "Go get nine gallons of gold from Hpyi Hpai land where witches and wizards live." Two boys accompanied him on his way to Hpyi Hpai land. In fact, the strong boy didn't know where exactly the land was. On their way, they saw a man who was trying to fall the tree down with his shin without using a knife. They asked him the way to Hpyi Hpai land. But he said, "I don't know where it is." Then, the strong boy tightly pinched the man with his fingers. But the man kept saying that he didn't know. So, the strong boy put more strength and pinched him. The man felt like his hands were going to break. He couldn't bear the pain, so he told them the way to Hpyi Hpai land, "Go straight down this road." They walked down the road and reached the sea. There, they saw a tall man fishing with his elephant. He was throwing the elephant into the sea and going fishing. So, they were so surprised. They asked him, "How can we get to Hpyi Hpai land?" The fisherman said, "I don't know." Then, the strong boy firmly grabbed him with his hands. The fisherman felt so hurt and shouted, "My hands are going to break! Release me, please." The boy said, "Then, tell us the way to Hpyi Hpai land." The fisherman said, "Just go straight down." They continued their journey. They saw another man who was rowing the boat with his legs and going back and forth between two banks of the sea. They asked him again, "How can we get to Hpyi Hpai land?" He said, "I don't know where it is." Then, the strong boy strangled the man's neck and threatened, "Tell us. If not, I'll kill you." The man was scared and said, "Go to the other side of this sea." They ordered the man to send them to the other side of the sea by his boat. When they reached there, they asked some people, "Where is Hpyi Hpai land?" They replied, "Just go a bit more. You will reach Hpyi Hpai land." The strong boy asked, "How many villagers are there?" They answered, "We don't know exactly. But they eat humans." The boy asked them again, "If we arrive at Hpyi Hpai land, whose house will we arrive first?" They said, "You will see Hpyi Hpai grandmother's house first." The boy let his fellow go to the grandmother's house first. Hpyi Hpai grandmother welcomed them warmly and prepared a meal for them. But she put a kind of leaf into the meal. It could make people turn into pigs if they ate. After eating the meal which Hpyi Hpai grandmother prepared, they turned into pigs. Meanwhile, the strong boy thought, "Why didn't they come back yet? Why are they taking a long time? I should follow them." Then, he went to Hpyi Hpai grandmother's house. As soon as he entered the house compound, the grandmother said, "Welcome. You are a guest from a far place. Come in. You must be hungry. I will prepare a meal for you soon. Can you build a fire, please? The wood is dried, so close your eyes when you build a fire. The spark might hit your eyes." The boy built a fire, but he didn't close his eyes. And the grandmother said, "When you fan the fire, you have to sit down." But he didn't listen to her. He stood up straight when he fanned the fire. After that, he turned back and looked at Hpyi Hpai grandmother. He saw that she was about to hit him with a hammer. He quickly strangled her neck and said, "I will kill you!" She begged, "Don't kill me. Tell me what you want. I can grant you." He said, "Where are the two boys who came to your house?" She denied, "I don't know. They didn't come to me." Then, he strangled her neck stronger. She couldn't bear the pain and said, "I will tell you. Let me go." Then, she put some leaves into the food for pigs and fed them. Surprisingly, they became humans again. But the boy didn't release her yet. He said, "I've heard that you have a lot of gold. Give us nine gallons of gold. If you don't, I will kill you." The grandmother gave the gold to him. After getting the gold, he wanted the magic leaves too. He said, "You have the leaves that can make people turn into pigs and can change back into humans. Give me those leaves too. If you don't, I will strangle your neck till you die." She begged, "Don't kill me, please. I can give the leaves to you." Then, she gave the leaves to them. At that time, they tied her from the back and fed the leaf that could make people turn into pigs. So, she became a big gilt. The strong man and his two fellows went back to their country with a lot of gold. They became rich and lived happily.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
