Title Manaw sha ndum hte pyen sam singkaw (Cloak of levitation and pot which can fulfil one's wishes) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The title of the story is 'a cloak of levitation and a pot which can fulfil one's wishes'. Once upon a time, there was a boy called Bat Wa Nawkra in a village. He was a hunter. He always went hunting in the forest and couldn't help his old parents. So, the villagers called him as a lazy person. Although he became a grown-up man, he couldn't help his parents. He always spent his time hunting in the forest. No one wanted their daughter marry him. Whenever Nawkra got some animals, the village chief always took one leg of that animal as tax. So, the village chief liked him. There were some villagers who usually ate meat that Nawkra got. They liked him too. Nawkra made his living by hunting for animals. One day, he could catch a huge deer. Even its horns were huge. But the deer didn't die and ran away. So, he chased it. He thought the deer would be dead somewhere in the forest since it got shot. He had already walked past nine hills. Then, he saw the deer ran up the mountain. So, he followed it quickly. But he couldn't see the deer footprints anymore on that mountain. He was already exhausted following the deer. Then, he just sat on the ground and took a rest. While he was resting, he looked around the surroundings. There grew many colourful and beautiful flowers there. He lit the tobacco with his match. And he smoked it while taking a rest. And there was a cave behind him. At that time, he heard shouting behind him and turned round to look what it was. He saw a ghoul running out of the cave. He was shocked and frightened. That ghoul looked totally scary. She had a long nose which could reach her toes. And she had got spines and hair on her body. She had no mouth, but she had canine teeth. Nawkra was so scared and shot her with his gun. She shouted, "Don't shoot me! Don't shoot me, please. I will be dead if I get shot. I will give you what you want." Then, Nawkra said, "Really? Will you give me everything I want? I want to gain the power that I can fly whenever I want. And I want food whenever I wish for." The ghoul said, "Just those two. I can grant you. You almost shoot me to death." She went into the cave and brought a cloak of levitation and a clay pot. She gave them to him and said, "This is the cloak of levitation. You can fly whenever you want. And this is the pot which can give you loads of food. You want only these two things, right." Nawkra said, "Yes, exactly." And he tested flying by wearing that cloak. He could literally fly! He was happy and flew around the country. One day, he flew over the palace. He saw a beautiful girl walking in the flower garden. So, he gently flew down towards the ground and stopped there. The girl was the princess of the country. He fell for her right away since she was gorgeous. He grabbed her on her waist and flew up in the sky. The princess was scared and struggled hard. Then, Nawkra gently said, "My lady, don't struggle. If I accidentally drop you, you might lose your life." The princess stopped struggling. He took her to Majoi Shingra Mt. Nawkra said to the princess, "I fall for you as soon as I saw you. So, I take you here. I am just a human although I can fly. Don't be afraid of me. I want to marry you." But the princess told him to send her back to the palace. She didn't dare go back alone. Then, they had to live there together. Majoi Shingra Mountain was a pleasant place where many colourful flowers were growing. But the princess was not happy to live there. She kept telling him to send her back. But he didn't want to send her back to the palace. So, the princess thought of how to run away from here all the time. One day, she got an idea. She thought to pretend like she loved him so much. There was a beautiful tree above the cave where they were living. There grew two flowers on that tree: red and white. She asked Nawkra, "Do you really love me?" He nodded his head and said, "Of course." She said, "Then, can you do a favor for me? Do you see the flowers over there? Pick those flowers for me." Nawkra was willing to pick the flowers for her and climbed up that tree. While he was on the tree, the princess took his cloak and shouted, "Hey stupid! Spend the rest of your life alone here! I will go back. Bye!" And she flew away. Nawkra was shocked and quickly jumped down from the tree. But he thought, "I can't get her since she has a cloak. I will just pick those flowers which make me lose my girl." Then, he climbed up the tree and picked a red flower. When he smelled it, its nice smell made his nose long till his toes. He was shocked and upset. But he thought, "Nothing can be worse than now. I will pick another flower too." Then, he picked it up and smelled it. His nose was back to normal when he smelled the white flower. He took those two flowers and climbed down the tree. He mumbled, "I do love her. I will find the princess." He packed all of his things such as the pot which could fulfil his wish and the gun. And he walked down the mountain. It was a difficult way to get to the base. The mountain was so steep and high that he could go only a few meters each day. But he tried his best to get to the base. Although he got at the base, it was a long way to reach the palace where the princess lived. There were many dense jungles on his way. Many wild animals were his danger when he walked past the jungles. It took him eight years to reach the palace. He was finding a way to get into the palace and find the princess. He did many things to get the chance to enter the palace. Finally, he could enter the palace. Nawkra was searching for the princess in the palace. Meanwhile, the princess was missing Majoi Shingra Mountain and its pleasant scenery. She felt sorry to Nawkra too. So, she was looking outside through the window of her room with the thought of missing them. Coincidentally, Nawkra saw her while he was in the garden under the window. Then, he crushed the red flower and spread the flower powder. And he went back to his house where he was staying as a guest. The princess got the smell. Suddenly, her nose went longer. She was shocked and upset. She cried a lot. The king heard his daughter's news. They didn't know what to do. At last, the king announced, "To the one who can cure my daughter, I will give my daughter and half of my country." That announcement was spread around the country. Then, the old lady from the house where Nawkra was staying at told him about that. Nawkra said, "I can cure her. But I'm afraid that the king might not keep his promise." That old lady told everyone in the village that Nawkra said like that. The news spread the whole country. It reached to the king. The king ordered his servants, "Just go escort that man! He said that he could cure my daughter." When the servants found him and told him to enter the palace, he disguised his look so that the princess wouldn't remember him. Nawkra told the king, "My lord, I can completely cure the princess. But I am afraid that you will not keep your promise. Can you keep your promise?" The king promised, "I will definitely keep my promise. Just cure my daughter." Then, Nawkra walked into the princess's room and talked with her the whole night. He cured her well. The princess didn't notice that he was Nawkra. She told him everything that had happened to her in the past. Nawkra asked her, "My lady, you seem like you still hate him so much." The princess said, "Not like that. It's true that I hate him. But now, I feel pity for him." Nawkra asked her again, "Then, he can't go back to his home, right?" She answered, "Of course. Majoi Shingra Mountain is a high and steep mountain. There is no way he can go down the mountain and go back home. He has to live there forever." He asked her, "If he can get to the base of the mountain with his effort, will you accept him again?" The princess was in silence and sighed. After a while, she quietly said, "It's not important now. Since my parents give their words to you, I have to marry you." Nawkra said, "If, I mean if I am that hunter, what will you do?" And he removed all the things on the face and showed her his true face. The princess was surprised and happy. She ran into his arms and cried. Nawkra comforted her, "Don't cry, my lady. We will have a happy future now." The next morning, the princess was happy and told her parents, "That medico is the one who took me to Majoi Shingra Mountain." But the king and the queen got mad at Nawkra. The king ordered his servants to catch Nawkra and send him to outskirts of the country. Nawkra thought of an idea about how to solve that problem. After the servants went back to the palace, he secretly followed them. And he spread the red flower powder in the whole palace. Almost everyone in the palace got that smell. Their noses were getting much longer than before. The king said, "Anyhow, we have to escort the medico again. Only he can cure all of us." He let his daughter persuade the medico to cure everyone in the palace. The princess and some servants went to the place where Nawkra stayed. And she begged, "Please, help us. Everyone in the palace is in trouble. Their noses are getting longer and longer. My parents regretted their actions towards you as well. Please, help us." Nawkra couldn't refuse the princess's request and spread the white flower powder in the palace. He cured all of them. In the end, the king gave his permission to Nawkra and the princess and gave half of the country as he promised. Nawkra and the princess lived happily the rest of their lives.
