Description Translation (Seng Pan)
A long time ago, there was a tiger and a rabbit. The tiger was quite stupid. One day, the rabbit said, "Tiger. During this winter, we still can sleep wherever we want. In the hot summer and winter, it would be hot, and it would rain heavily too. We should build our house. And let's see whose house is the best." The tiger also agreed and started building his house. He built a big gorgeous house. However, the rabbit didn't start building anything. He just killed the times without doing anything. The tiger asked, "My friend, rabbit. Have you finished building your house?" "Finish. I've done it before you started. What about yours?" the rabbit replied. "It's done," the tiger said. Since the rabbit asked to go and see the house, the tiger brought him and showed him his house. Next, they went and took a look at the rabbit's house. "My friend, rabbit. You said you had finished building your house. But I can see nothing," the tiger said. "I didn't make it like yours. I just used the mirror. It will not get wet when it's raining. And at night, you can see the sky and the stars," the rabbit replied. "Wow! Amazing. It's good that the house won't be wet and you can watch the stars at night. I am sure you can sleep well. Do you want to swap the houses?" the tiger asked. "No. I can't swap! I don't want to. I just want to live in this house and watch the stars every night," the rabbit said. Since the tiger asked for it, again and again, the rabbit finally agreed to swap the houses. On the night they exchanged the houses, it didn't rain. So, the tiger was happy and said, "It's a nice house. I also can see the moon and stars." On the other hand, the rabbit was quite satisfied that the stupid tiger fell into his trap. He stayed warmly inside the tiger's house. The other night, it rained heavily. "Rabbit said it's made with mirror. How could the rain fall on me? He is a vile friend," the tiger mumbled. He went and checked the rabbit. He saw that the rabbit was sleeping peacefully. The rabbit locked the door so that the tiger couldn't enter the house. So, he shouted, "Rabbit. Come out! Why did you lie to me? See! I am all wet and cold the whole night." The rabbit replied, "You fell into my trap by yourself. It's your business." But he was a bit scared of the tiger. He worried that he would be caught and eaten by the tiger when he went out to find food the next morning. Therefore, he replied to the tiger, "Ok! Wait there a moment. I'm coming." The rabbit went out of the house from the door at the back and ran away. Before leaving the house, he told the tiger to come inside when he shouted it was ready. And the rabbit also made the fire at the fireplace. When he arrived under a big tree, he climbed up and stayed on the tree. There was a beehive on it. The rabbit also brought a stick when he climbed up the tree. He shouted, "Tiger, you can come inside now." The tiger heard and went inside the house. However, the poor tiger got burned in the fire, so he dived quickly into the water. After it, the tiger chased after the rabbit. When the tiger arrived near the big tree, the rabbit asked, "My friend, tiger. Where are you going to?" "Don't say anything! You put me on fire. My hair is ugly now. I'm going to eat you," the tiger replied. "Please don't eat me! I'm going to play the gong which my ancestors gave me," the rabbit said. "Where is it?" the tiger asked. Then, the rabbit showed the beehive. But the tiger didn't notice that it was a beehive. "Is it the gong? Can you let me play it once?" the stupid tiger asked. "No. This is the one my ancestors played before. So, I can't let you play it," the rabbit replied. "If you allow me to play it, I will not eat you anymore," the tiger said. "Alright. Then play it when I say Ok," the rabbit replied. "Why do I have to follow what you say?" the tiger asked. "I'm afraid that you will eat me," the rabbit said. The poor tiger also trusted the rabbit again. After that, the rabbit ran away. He stopped near a pile of cow shit, and he put a coil of thorn inside. The rabbit shouted, "Ok! You can climb up the tree." As the tiger heard it, he climbed up and played the beehive, which he assumed a gong. Then, the bees stung him. "Rabbit, you lie me again and again!" the tiger screamed and ran. He also got so angry at the rabbit. And he looked for him. The tiger found that the rabbit was sitting next to a pile of cow shit. "Rabbit. I will eat you now," the tiger said angrily. "No. Don't eat. I am enjoying sitting here. Look, this is the stool that my ancestors gave me. Even I don't dare to touch it. So, I'm just sitting beside it, and I am still considering I should sit on it or not," the rabbit replied. "Don't tell me a lie again," the tiger said. "I'm in a dilemma. Since my ancestors gave this stool, it's a precious stool," the rabbit replied. "Then, give it to me. Let me sit on it," the tiger said. The rabbit denied him as he did before. But the tiger also insisted on allowing him sit on it and scared the rabbit that he would eat him if he didn't allow it. So, the rabbit asked, "If I allowed you to sit on it, what would you do?" The tiger said he wouldn't eat the rabbit. "Ok. But don't sit on it now. Sit on it when I say so," the rabbit said and ran to his hollow. He stood at the entrance, which was quite small. "Tiger. Now you can sit on it," the rabbit shouted. The tiger sat on the pile of cow shit and the thorn inside it stung on his butts. He was insane and ran to the rabbit. "I will surely eat you today," the tiger said. "You are the only one who trusted whatever I said. Eat me if you can," the rabbit replied and went into his hollow. The tiger was so angry and inserted his head into the hollow. His head was stuck in the hollow and died there.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
