Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, in a big village, there was a rich man who traded goods. He had three sons. When the three sons became adults, he wanted them to learn trading skills. So, he gave them 100 kyats each. He told them, "Trade goods with this money. This is your capital amount. Gain profit." The two elder brothers went to the town market and bought goods by using 100 kyats. They sold them out and gained profit. On the other hand, the youngest brother found a corpse on his way. He thought, "Whose corpse is this?" He looked around and saw a house near him. He went there and knocked on the door. Inside the house, he met the landlady. He asked her, "Why did you place the corpse over there?" She answered, "I don't have any money to bury the corpse and hold a funeral. I just leave him there. If someone wants to bury him, they can." She sadly said, while crying. He was pity for her. He said, "Don't worry. I will hold a funeral for him. Go call your neighbours. Use these 50 kyats for the funeral. And these 50 kyats are for the tomb. I will pay for the funeral." That day, he bought a coffin, dug the hole to bury the corpse and held a funeral. He went home empty-handed. His father asked him, "What did you do with your money?" He answered, "I found a corpse on my way, so I used all my money to arrange the funeral." The father was angry at him. He was mad at him and said, "I will give you another amount to start your business. Gain some profit." He gave them 200 kyats each. For the first time, he gave them 100 kyats. This time, he gave them 200 kyats each to do business. The two elder brothers happily said, "We have enough capital to invest. We will gain a lot of profit." They didn't help their younger brother. The youngest brother was innocent and didn't know how to do business. The two elder brothers discussed and started their business together. They really gained a lot of profit. The youngest brother went to the town and walked past the court. He saw a beautiful woman was arrested in a jail. The officers were investigating her. She was crying sadly. He saw her and felt pity for her. So, he secretly asked her what had happened to her. She explained, "I don't steal anything. But they accuse me of stealing 100 kyats. So they put me in jail. If I can't give them 100 kyats, I will be in prison. I don't steal any money. When I went to that house, I saw a man coming out of that house. I told the officers about it. But they accuse me as a thief." She explained to him about her. He felt pity for her. He said to the officers, "Whether she has stolen 100 kyats or not, I will pay for her. Release her, please." He saved her. In fact, the woman was the princess. She gave him a ring. She said, "Don't ever take off this ring. When we meet again, I can remember you if you wear this ring. Never take off this ring." She gave him a ring. Then they parted ways. The youngest son had only 100 kyats left and went back to his father. He didn't have any profit. His father was so angry at him and said, "You are the most stupid son. You are useless. So, don't ever come back here. Get out of this house!" The father drove him away. The youngest son was upset and had to get out of the house. He was sitting under a tree, feeling depressed. "What should I do now? I don't know how to make money. I don't have anything to eat too," he thought to himself. At that time, a man in a suit walked toward him. The man asked him, "What is happening to you? Why do you look so sad?" The young man said, "I don't know how to make money. And I help people with all the money I have. So, my dad is mad at me and drives me out of the house. I don't really know how to make money and am so stupid. Now, I probably won't have anything to eat. I am upset. That's why I am sitting here." The man in a suit said, "Don't be depressed. In seven days, come here again. Meet me here. By then, everything will be smooth and great for you." He knew everything about the young man's incident; the young man had met with the princess at the court. Seven days later, there was a consort selection event for the princess. The king looked for a son-in-law. He invited every rich man, prince, and every young man from his neighbouring countries. That was the day the princess chose her consort. The youngest man went to the place where he and the old man had agreed to meet after seven days. The old man said, "Go to the palace. Everything you wish for will truly come true. But you must make a promise to me." The young man asked, "What kind of promise?" The old man said, "When you are there and own a lot of property, you must give me half of everything you have. Can you make a promise?" The young man said, "Yes, I will give you half. Help me, please." As the old man instructed, the young man went straight to the palace. He was exhausted after running fast. When he arrived there, the princess was sitting beautifully and choosing her consort. There were many princes, rich men and other young men walking in front of the princess. However, she hadn't chosen anyone yet. Finally, the young man thought, "I should participate in this event." He wasn't well-dressed because his father had driven him out, and he looked shabby. But he wore the ring that the princess gave him. He was walking in front of the princess. The princess looked at him and found him familiar. She thought, "This man looks like the one who saved me from jail. I gave him the ring, just so we could remember when we met again. Yes, I gave him the ring." She looked at him from head to toe. Then she noticed that he was wearing the ring she had given him. So, she grabbed his hand and took him to the king. She said, "Dad, he is the one whom I will marry." The king looked at him and saw that he was shabby. He asked his daughter, "What is happening? The princess said, "Dad, this man saved me from prison. When I was in trouble, you were not there and I didn't know what to do. No one was there for me. I was arrested. He was the one who saved me. Since that time, I have decided to marry him. I decided that he would be the man whom I would marry one day. Dad, arrange a wedding for us. Allow us to marry." The king was deep in thought, "This man saved my daughter. I will let him marry her." Then he held a wedding for them. Also, he gave them one of his countries. He celebrated their wedding. He also gave them his properties. The young man became the king of the country that his father-in-law, the king, had given him. After a few days, the man in the suit, whom the new king made a promise, came to him. The old man said, "You become the king and own a lot of properties. Do you still remember me?" The new king said, "Of course, I remember what we agreed upon." The man said, "Keep your promise." The king said, "Yes, I will." The king gave him everything he owned in half. The old man was not satisfied and asked, "What else?" The king said, "That's all I own. I don't have anything else. I give you half of everything I own." The man insisted, "You still have one more." The king said, "No, I don't have." The man insisted, "Yes, you do." Then the king asked him, "What do I have?" The man said, "You have your wife, the queen. We need to divide her in half. Whether we divide her into upper and lower halves or left and right, you must give me half. You promised to give me half of everything you own." The king didn't know what to do and was depressed. He begged the man, "My brother, I beg you. Please leave the princess. I love her so much. Because of her, I am able to live this kind of life. She is my benefactor. I don't want to hurt her. I don't want to do that to her. So, I will leave this place. You live with my wife and rule this country. I don't wish to cut her in half." At that time, the old man said, "I understand your true self. You always want to help others. You are the righteous man. You have a kind, pure mind. Now, I know you. I won't take anything you give me. I don't take your wife too. I will give you everything back. I will give you everything." And he walked away. The old man retraced his steps. From that day on, the king and queen ruled the country fairly. Together, they overcame every difficulty and obstacle they faced by supporting each other. The country became a prosperous land, and they ruled it peacefully.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,564 translations are currently available (March 6, 2025). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
