Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a big palace. As the prince was the heir to the throne, he set out to a far place to learn new skills. His teacher taught him different skills. One day, he visited the areas around his school and saw a woman drying sesame seeds under the sun. He took some sesame seeds and tasted them. He found them tasty, so he took a lot more than the first time and ate the seeds. He couldn't stop eating them. When he ate the sesame seeds for the third time, the woman became angry and reported him to his teacher. "Your pupil frequently steals my sesame seeds. He has already stolen them three times. Teach your pupil," she told the teacher. The teacher said, "I am so sorry. I will teach him not to steal anything. It won't happen again." He promised her that he would teach his student a lesson. And he beat him three times. Then the prince was getting angry and thought, "How could he dare to beat a prince like me? He is such a bad teacher. When I become the king, I will kill him!" He felt resentful toward his teacher. He learned every skill that he needed and went back to the palace. When his father died, he became the king. He ascended the throne. He thought about getting revenge on the teacher who had beaten him. He ordered his servants to escort his teacher to the palace. When the servants arrived at the teacher's place, they said, "The king has called for you to come to the palace. He wants to reward you." The teacher said, "He is calling me to kill me, not to reward me. I beat him three times in the past." He thought, "I need to teach him a lesson. If I don't, this country will not be pleasant and peaceful." Then he went to the palace. When he was at the palace, the new king said, "Actually, I called you not to reward you. I called you to the palace to kill you. Do you remember you beat me three times? Now, I am the king. I will kill you." The teacher told the king, "Before you kill me, let me tell you something. If you want to kill me, it's okay. However, if you hold a grudge every time you face this kind of situation, it is not good. You won't forgive your people. A king must be kind and merciful to his people." The king said, "No! You are wrong!" The king's servants said, "My king, he says it right." The king firmly refused to accept what his teacher said. The king's servants stood by the teacher. Finally, the king reflected, "A king should be merciful. Yes, he is right. As I become the king, I should show mercy." So, the king said, "Thank you for teaching me, my teacher." He granted him the title of counselor. He called his teacher's family to the palace and let them stay together happily.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,564 translations are currently available (March 6, 2025). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
