Once upon a time, there was a clever monkey in a village. He lived on a tree. There was a lake near the tree where the monkey lived. And there was a crocodile in that lake. The crocodile was wicked and also quite stupid. One day, while the monkey was eating fruits from the tree where he lived, the crocodile approached him. The crocodile said, "Monkey, please give me some fruits." The monkey said, "If I give you some fruits, I won't have enough food for the month. These fruits are my food for the whole month. I am sorry I can't give you any." But the crocodile waited for fruits every day. He thought about eating the pieces of fruit that the monkey dropped. But the monkey never dropped any fruits. He said he wouldn't give any fruits. He said like that. The crocodile thought, "Fine. One day, you will need to drink water from the lake where I stay. When you come drink water, I will eat you!" Then he went into the water. One day, while the monkey was eating fruits, he felt thirsty. So he climbed down the tree and prepared to drink water. The crocodile was ready to attack the monkey. The monkey saw the crocodile approaching him. So he drank water quickly and climbed up the tree. The crocodile was always ready to attack the monkey while drinking water and he almost caught the monkey that time. As soon as he approached the monkey, the monkey dodged him and ran away. The monkey thought, "I should move from here." He thought about moving to a new place far away from the crocodile. At night, he moved to another place which was far from his previous home. The next day, the crocodile said, "I will catch this monkey when he comes to drink water here today." He was planning to eat the monkey. When he looked up at the tree, the monkey was not there. "Where did he go?" he thought. He waited for the monkey for two or three days, but the monkey didn't show up. But he kept waiting for the monkey for almost a year. "I think the monkey runs away from here. I will look for him," he thought. One year later, he swam along the river and looked for the monkey. One day, he found the monkey drinking water somewhere near the river. He saw him and thought, "He moves here. I will come early tomorrow and wait here to catch him." And he went back home. The next day, the monkey drank water and went back home. On his way back home, the crocodile secretly followed him. The crocodile lived on one side of the river, while the monkey lived on the other. The crocodile saw that the monkey lived on the other side of the river. On a small river island, there was a tree. The tree was bearing fruit, and they looked so delicious. (The monkey.) The crocodile thought, "No matter what, the monkey has to cross the river if he wants to eat those fruits. I will wait for him in the water." Then he lurked underwater, secretly waiting for the time to ambush him. But the monkey was sharp and clever. He stepped on a rock and jumped onto the river island. He jumped to reach the tree. The crocodile saw the monkey jumping to reach the tree. The monkey always did like that. After three days, the crocodile thought, "I should plan something. I will place my body on the rock, hiding my head and tail in the water. I should place my body there. The monkey must stand on my body, no matter what." He thought of a plan. He put his head and tail in the water and waited for the monkey. At that time, the monkey came to eat the fruits. He sat on the rock and thought, "This rock is hard and flat, but I think it is bumpy today. And it is rough." He was puzzled. Every time he stepped on the rock, "The rock, send me home today," he always said something like that. He said, "Let me step on you today." When he talked to the rock, it replied, "Okay. Step on me to fulfill your daily needs. Eat the fruits and survive." The rock also said like that. That day, the monkey felt suspicious and thought, "The rock is bumpy today. Something is suspicious." He moved closer and asked, "The rock, are you waiting for me today too?" The crocodile thought, "Why is he talking to the rock? The rock can't speak." So he stayed silent. The monkey said, "You used to talk back to me. Why are you not talking to me?" The crocodile thought to himself, "Oh, this rock used to talk to him. When the monkey speaks this time, I will respond." Then the monkey said, "Are you waiting for me again today?" "Yes, I am. Ride on me. I will send you there," the crocodile, pretending to be the rock, replied to the monkey. And he let the monkey ride on his back. The monkey thought, "This must be the crocodile. Now, I am now on his back. What should I do?" At that moment, the crocodile suddenly attacked the monkey and said, "I have been waiting for you for a year. Today, I will eat you! I will eat you." The monkey said, "My friend crocodile, I know you will eat me today. I understand I will die. Open your mouth. You don't even need to use your strength. I will go into your mouth." The crocodile said, "Okay." When he opened his mouth, his eyes closed. The monkey said, "Open wide. My body is big. Open your mouth wider so that I can get inside." Then the crocodile opened his mouth wide. When his eyes closed, the monkey stepped on the crocodile's head and jumped to the other side of the river. When he reached there, he said, "My friend crocodile, I am free today. I will never come here again. I won't." The monkey could escape from the crocodile.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,564 translations are currently available (March 6, 2025). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
