Once in a village, there was a family. The father, the mother, and their three sons and daughter lived together happily. They were rich. They were not that rich before their daughter was born. After the youngest daughter was born, they became rich. They owned many cows, buffaloes, and horses. They lived in a big house, too. They became the most famous and richest family in that village. The parents called their children to the living room and asked them, "My children, you have lived a rich and happy life. Because of whom is that?" Ma Gam, the eldest son, said, "It's because of Mom and Dad." Ma Naw, the second son, said politely, "It's because of you." The third son, Ma La, also said, "It's because of you." The youngest daughter said, "It's because of me." Her parents were mad and said, "How could you say that? You have lived a rich life. But you don't show your gratitude. So, get out of this house. We will not let you live in this house anymore." They gave her two silver coins, two plates, two pots, and two packs of rice. And they gave her a horse and drove her out. The youngest daughter made a promise to herself and talked to the horse, "I will live where you stop. If there is a boy where you stop, I will be his wife and live with him." They rode past some big houses in the village. But the horse didn't stop. Then, she arrived on the outskirts. She thought, "Hmm, I told my parents that it was all because of me that we were rich. But now, this horse didn't take me to any rich houses." She was a bit worried. The horse stopped at the place on the outskirts. There were the widow and her son. The widow's son was stupid and naive. The widow noticed that the girl with the horse had stopped in front of her house. So, she came out of her house and said, "Oh, you are the daughter of the richest man in the village. Why did you come to such a poor family like us? What do you want?" The girl replied, "I want to live here with you." The widow didn't want her to stay with them. But the girl insisted, "It's okay for me. I can live with you in this house. Let me live here." Then, she cooked rice for her husband and her mother-in-law. After a few days, they didn't have any rice. She gave one silver coin to her husband and told him, "Take this silver coin and buy some rice." On his way to purchase some rice, he saw a big bird that could be shot easily. So, he looked for a stone to throw at the bird. But he couldn't find any stones. So he threw the silver coin at the bird, with which he was planning to buy rice. The bird was flying away after hearing the sound. When he was looking for that coin, he couldn't find it either. Then, he just retraced his steps and went back home. At home, his wife asked him, "Where is the rice?" He said, "I couldn't buy it." She asked him, "Why?" He explained to her, "On my way, I saw the bird and tried to catch it by throwing the silver coin at it. But I couldn't catch it either." Then she gave him another silver coin. And she said, "We are hungry. Buy some rice with this coin. We don't have any rice." He said, "Okay." Like the first time, the bird appeared in front of him again. He tried to catch it again and threw the coin at it. But he lost both. Then, he went back home without rice. He was helpless and didn't know what to say to his wife, so he went to where he usually made pellets with his friends. Since he was walking with a limp, his friends looked down on him and just gave him a far place to make pellets. While he was digging some soil to make pellets, he saw things like silver coins that his wife gave him to buy rice. When he went back home, his wife got really mad at him. Then, he told her, "I have lots of that kind of coin." She asked him, "Don't lie to me." He said, "Why should I?" Then, she said, "Let's go there and check." When they were there, he showed his wife that these were his friends' places. His place was a far-off place. And he told her, "This is my place." He picked up one coin and gave it to her. She was surprised and rubbed it with a cloth. It really was a silver coin. They continued digging the pit and saw a huge amount of silver coins. She told him, "We can't carry it all by ourselves. Go get the horse." He went back home and took the horse to the pit. They carried almost half the amount of silver coins with the horse. They had to carry those coins three times. The girl knew that she couldn't just keep them inside her house, so she dug a big pit and kept the coins inside it. And she built a new house exactly like her parents' house. She and her husband spent their lives as a rich couple. On the other hand, the girl's parents got poorer since she got out of the house. Their horses died due to many accidents. Their goats were eaten by tigers, and money was stolen too. Then, they were getting poorer day by day. Their three sons were also dead. Soon, the mother was dead too. Only the father was alive, but he was depressed. He thought, "I should go to my eldest daughter." He was trying to find his daughter along the street, but he couldn't see her. Then, he reached the outskirts. He saw a big house like his there. He decided to go inside. Luckily, he met his daughter inside the house. The daughter welcomed him warmly and said, "You came to the right place, dad. Stay here with us. Where is mom?" He said, "Your mom is dead." Then, she asked him, "What about my brothers?" He said, "They are all dead. I am the only one who is alive." She told him, "It's okay. You live here with us." But the father felt guilty that he had blamed her in the past. He couldn't face his daughter because he was embarrassed. So he committed suicide by taking poison. He died in the kitchen. Therefore, Kachin people believe that there are souls that died in accidents or by murder in the kitchen. In mountain regions, we pour some alcohol on the floor when we drink alcohol in the kitchen. It is like we give offerings to those nats. Since then, we have had that custom.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
