Title Nyau hte yu a lam (The cat and the rat) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell is about a cat and a mouse. In the past, the animals and humans could communicate each other. At that time, mice were bigger than cats. They were big and beautiful. They could reproduce little mice at a high rate. Humans usually ate the mice at that time. The cats were much smaller than the mice. So, they couldn't catch mice and ate them. They were jealous of people eating mice. Then, one cat was thinking how to do to eat the mice. She was thinking so hard for three years. Then, she got an idea how to do. One day, she was waiting for the mice on their way. She saw a mouse and said, "My friend mouse, I would like to tell you something. I tell only you, not everyone. People harvest only one time in a year. So, don't eat their rice grains and crops." The mouse said, "They plant lots of vegetables and rice every year. It's okay to eat. They eat us too." The cat said, "We should feel pity for humans." The mouse said, "Why should we? They eat us too. We are not going to die all just because they catch and eat us. We can reproduce lots of babies withing three or four months. There are many of us. We eat some of us. So, if we don't eat their rice grains, what should we eat?" When the mouse answered like that, the cat's idea to eat the mice was not successful. The cat was thinking for another idea how to do. It took her three years to think the idea. Then, she got an idea. She was waiting for a mouse on his way this time too. She met a mouse and said, "I want to tell you something." The mouse said, "Yes, tell me." She said, "You all are eating lots of rice grains which people grew. So, they are planning to kill all of you." The mouse believed what the cat said and asked, "It could be true then. Give us advice how to do." The cat said, "Okay, I'll help you. Hide in the burrow for three months. And store food for all of you. Don't go to people for a while. If you don't go to them, they won't know where to find you and couldn't kill you." And she continued, "Don't breathe a lot too. Then, your body will be small. And you don't have to eat a lot of food. If you eat just a little amount of rice from people, they won't get so angry." The mouse told all of his friends and relatives about it. They dug burrows and stayed in it for three months as the cat's advice. They bore the hunger although they were starving. Then, their bodies became smaller, but their eyes still remained big. Their mouths became pointed because they had to bear the hunger all the time. And their tails were getting smaller too. Their fur became messy as well. Since then, all the mice which were born as small mice. Thenceforth, the cats could catch the mice so easily and ate them. The cat's idea was successful. So, they can catch and eat the mice easily till today.
