Description Translation (Rita)
The story is about a young man who can beat an elephant. Once upon a time, there was a big country between three high mountains. It was a Kingdom country. The weather was so cold because it was situated at the base of the mountains. So, the citizens needed to take a sunbath when the sun rose. One day, while the pregnant queen was sunbathing by covering herself up in a red velvet blanket, a big vulture swooped down and grabbed her in its talons. A vulture was so big that it could even carry an elephant. It assumed her as meat. At first, the queen was surprised. She felt like she was sitting in a hammock. The vulture put her on the tallest tree at the highest mountain. The tree was so big that around seven grown-up men had to hug. There was a place which was made like a bed on that tree. It left her there. She thought, "I've heard before that the animals run away when someone shouts." So, she shouted loudly. Many birds were flying away. She thought to herself, "If I shouted when my husband and his men came to help me, this bird would drop me there. Now, they all left me alone. But it's okay. I can survive." She shouted frequently not to the vulture come back. And she saw that there was much dried meat hanging in that tree. She ate that meat to survive. After some days, she gave birth. She wrapped her baby in a red velvet blanket. There was a hunter who usually searched preys near that tree. He heard the baby crying. He was surprised to hear the sound. So, he asked, "Who is it? Is it a human?" The queen was so happy and said, "Yes. We are here because a vulture caught us. I am the queen. Help us, please." The hunter said, "Okay. Wait a minute. Let me go get a ladder." He brought a ladder and helped the mother and the baby climbing down from the tree. He told the woman, "I live right over there, near the river. I work on a farm too. You two can live with me. I am cousin of the king. I am his brother. But I don't want to be a king, so I ran away and live here." Many years later, the baby boy had grown up. The hunter, his uncle, taught him some lessons; how to write, read or speak. Every evening, about 700 elephants came to his uncle. They could understand what he was talking about. They did what his uncle asked them to do. His uncle taught him how to handle with the elephants too. Then, he could also communicate with those elephants when he was at 7 or 8 years old. The elephants loved him so much too. Many years had passed. One fine night, they saw a moon ring while they were staying outside the house. The queen said, "Who died in the country? Perhaps, someone who is in high rank die." The uncle said, "Your husband died. Now, your son is also 16 years old. He can go back to the country and be a king." The boy said, "But I don't know how to fight against enemies." His uncle said, "Then, take all these elephants when you go there." Then, he went to the country and said, "I am the son of the late king. I am coming here to be a leader of you." The old men from his father's country said, "That's right. He is the real son of the late king. He can be a king." The kings from other neighbour countries were afraid of him because he had many elephants. The kings were discussing, "How should we do with him? He is so good at handling elephants. If we don't catch him now, he could threaten us later. Then, we must give our countries. So, what shall we do to catch him?" One king suggested, "What about using a white elephant to catch him?" They all agreed with that idea. They created a wooden elephant and put some machine inside it. And they painted it in white. They let the elephant move near the great king. When his servants saw the white elephant, they said to the king, "My lord, there is a white elephant near our country." The king said to his servants, "You go and catch first. If you can't catch it, I will come at that time." But they couldn't catch it because it was really fast since it was equipped with machines. They came back and said, "My lord, we couldn't catch it. We think you should catch it." The king said, "Okay, I will catch it definitely." He rode on a black elephant and went to catch the white one. He kept chasing after it. Soon, he reached at another country. At that time, the king from that country came out and said, "We caught you! We will keep you as our prisoner." They put him in the prison, but treated him well. After four or five months, the king felt angry and said, "I can't stay as your prisoner anymore. Kill me or release me!" The king from that country said, "We won't kill you. You have to teach us your mantra of handling elephants!" But the king of that country didn't have any sons. They had only one princess. She was gorgeous. The king was worried that the king in the prison would love his daughter while teaching mantra. So, he planned to cover a blanket between them. And he said to the king in the prison, "Don't look at her! We are embarrassed to show our daughter because she is too ugly." The king in the prison said, "Fine." The king of that country said to his daughter, "Don't sneak! Just learn mantra." Then, they started learning mantra. The king who was teaching was curious and wanted to know the learner very much. He thought, "Seem like it is the girl's voice. What kind of girl is she?" One day while they were learning mantra, the king said to the princess, "You are stupid. You can't get the mantra although we have learnt for a long time!" The princess got angry and shouted, "I know a lot. How could you say I am stupid? You are stupid." The king said, "How dare you tell me stupid?" And he took off the blanket between them. He thought the princess didn't have one eye, had skin problem and was ugly. But when he took the cover off, he saw a very beautiful princess. He fell in love immediately. The princess said, "You can't love me. My parents will get angry." Then, the king said, "Don't worry about it." He said to the princess's father, "Now, the princess has learnt the mantra. So, she needs to practice riding the elephant." They agreed with him. The princess pretended as a man and followed the king. The king put the princess on the elephant and ran away. He took her to his country. Then, the princess's father said, "Come back. Don't run away. You two can get married." Then, the two countries became allied. The king and the princess got married and lived happily forever.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
