Title Shingkra la hte kasha (The widower and his child) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Many years ago, there was a widower in a village. He was a businessman. He had two daughters. They were Ma Kaw and Ma Lu. The elder sister, Ma Kaw, was short-tempered and aggressive. She didn't want to work at all. In contrast, Ma Lu was hard-working. She just stayed at home and worked the whole day. While the man was on a business trip, he often stayed at a guesthouse. The guesthouse was clean and tidy. Meals were cooked for him whenever he stayed there. One day, he heard a voice talking to him, "Hello mister, I would like a wife. Will you give me your daughter?" The man said, "I can't see you. I can hear only your voice." The voice said, "You will see me when I become your son-in-law." The man said, "Then which one do you want?" The voice said, "I have seen your daughters. I like your youngest daughter." The man said, "Okay. I will let you marry my daughter." The voice kept saying, "If you want some gold, cows, and buffaloes, I will bring them. I will put them in front of your house." The next morning, the man saw many buffaloes, cows, and gold. He took them home. However, he felt unhappy although he got lots of gold and other valuable things. The eldest daughter asked him, "Father, do you bring those?" He said, "Yes. Take whatever you want. Your sister said she didn't want anything. She only wants a white rose. When she told me that she wanted the white rose, I promised her that I would find one for her. But I couldn't get one." He felt unhappy because he didn't get the white rose. Then he slept. Later, he found the white rose at the place where he was asked to let his daughter marry. He saw a really beautiful rose in the field. He asked permission from the owner to pick the white rose. He said, "Let me pick this white rose, please. My daughter loves it so much." Surprisingly, the rose did not wither. So, he took the valuable gold and the rose home, which the second daughter wanted. However, the man felt unhappy. Then, Ma Lu asked him, "What happened, father? You look sad." He put a smile on his face and said, "Nothing. I am good." The eldest daughter didn't notice anything and just felt happy. However, the father looked really sad even while they were eating dinner. Ma Lu asked him again, "Father, tell me. You look really unhappy. Did something happen?" The father said, "Since you ask me many times, I will tell you what had happened. I have picked the white rose, which you want, from the place where no one sees easily. So, the owner of the white rose asks you to get married." Ma Lu said, "It's okay. I will marry that person." He said, "They also give us these valuable things. I don't know who that person is. I can't see him. I can only hear his voice. I believe he is from the place where I usually take a rest while travelling. How could I let you get married to that person?" Ma Lu said, "Don't worry, father. Just give me a sharp sword. Give me the sword." Then Ma Lu and her father went to the guesthouse. When they arrived there, they heard the voice saying, "Uncle, leave your daughter here. You can go home." The father said, "I have never seen you. You want my daughter, but I haven't seen you yet. Of course, you treated me to delicious meals. But I would like to see you. Don't give me any valuable things." The voice said, "No, I will give you a lot. Take everything home." The voice kept saying, "Go back home tomorrow morning. Take all these animals home with you." Then, he went back home the next morning. Ma Lu had to stay there alone. She didn't see her husband, so she said, "You said you love me. If you really love me, show me your appearance." The voice said, "If you want to see me, go to the garden where the white rose was picked. You will see a scary monster. Then kill it with your sword. Whatever you see, just kill." The next morning, she went to the garden and looked for her husband. But there was no one there. When she looked closely, she saw a monster with black hair lying somewhere in the garden. She braved herself and killed it at once. After that, she went back. And she said, "My husband, I met a really scary monster there. I killed it. Tell me where you are." The voice said, "You will see me tonight. You will see the man who is going to marry you tonight." At night, a handsome man appeared right in front of her. The next morning, they prepared everything they needed and got married. Ma Lu asked him, "How could you give those valuable things to my father? There is nothing here. You could also build a really nice house. What do you do?" The man said, "This is the place where my ancestors lived. I couldn't appear as a human until I got married to you. After I got married to you, I could appear as a human. I am really thankful to you. Although we live in a place where no one lives now, we will have many children. There will be lots of our descendants here, so I married you." This is the end of the story.
