Title Gwi nmai gangat ai lam (Why dogs wag their tails) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Now, I am going to tell you about why dogs wave their tails when they see people. Once upon a time, there was a couple who had a beautiful daughter. They loved each other so much. When the daughter grew up, she went to another place to study. On the daughter's birthday, the parents wanted to give her a gold ring as a present. But there was no one to pass the present to their daughter. So they let the dog send the present to their daughter. They ordered the dog and the cat to send the present to their daughter. The dog bit the ring. They set forth their journey to the daughter. On the way, they arrived at a lake. The cat told the dog, "My friend, you said you can swim, but I can't swim. I will ride on your back." The dog said, "Okay. Just ride on my back. Hold this ring. Please make sure not to drop." When both of them arrived on the other side of the lake, the cat ran away with the ring. The dog shouted, "The cat, why are you running away with the ring? That is the ring for the daughter of our masters." The cat said, "I don't care! What I know is I like that ring." And he ran away. The dog tried to chase him, but he lost him. The dog kept going around searching for the cat. On his way, he met a wolf. He asked the wolf, "Do you see the cat?" The wolf said, "I don't see the cat, but I saw a wild cat." The dog asked, "What colour is that cat?" The wolf replied, "It's white." Then the dog said, "It's not a wild cat. It's just a cat. Where did that cat go?" The wolf pointed at the right side and said, "He went that way." The dog kept chasing the cat. On his way, he met a bear. He asked the bear, "While you are sitting on the tree, have you seen a cat running away with a ring?" The bear said, "No, I haven't. I saw only a white animal running away with the golden thing." The dog said, "That's the cat I am looking for. I will go catch him." No matter how fast he ran, he couldn't find the cat. In fact, the cat went into a stranger's house. So the dog was going back to his owner's house. The owner asked him, "Did you successfully send the ring?" The dog said, "I couldn't because the cat ran away with the ring." The owner made a remark, "What! You are just a useless dog! I won't feed you anything!" And he put the dog in the cage for twenty days without feeding. After twenty days, he let the dog out. The dog asked him, "Will you give me some food?" He said, "I won't! I will just cut your tail!" And he said, "Get out of my house now!" The dog didn't know where to go, so he just went to the owner's daughter's school. The dog lost his tail. He met the owner's daughter there. She asked him, "Why don't you have your tail? How did you lose it?" He said, "Your father cut it." She wondered and asked him, "Why?" He explained everything in detail. Then she said, "Oh, I should cut your ears off! Just get out of my sight!" The dog just ran away. Meanwhile, the owner thought the dog might tell everyone about why he lost his tail. So he was looking for the dog. Then the dogs waved their tails at him just to show that they still had their tails. Since then, dogs have waved their tails whenever they see people.
