Title Tsap hte jaugawng (The bear and the hunter) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story is about how the hunter and the bear became enemies. Many years ago, the hunter and the bear were friends. The hunter and the bear visited each other's places and spent their time happily. One day, there was a strong windstorm, thunder, and lightning. The hunter's house was destroyed by the storm. The hunter was in despair and didn't know what to do. Later, he cut the trunk down, which was the bear's house, and rebuilt his house. Then the bear asked him, "My friend, why did you cut down the tree that I use as a home?" The hunter said, "I cut it because I need it. I am so sorry for that." They were still friends at that time. After some days, the hunter went hunting and was about to shoot the deer. At that moment, the bear thought, "He even cut down my tree, which was my previous house. I will drive the deer away too." It did it just for fun. But the hunter got mad and shot the bear. The bear's ear was injured. Then it proclaimed, "Whenever we see each other, one of us will be killed!" And it went into the forest. The hunter didn't go hunting anymore. After almost twenty years, the hunter went hunting again with his son. After walking in the forest for a while, they saw a bear with an injured ear. Suddenly, the hunter remembered that this bear was the one with whom he had been friends in the past. So he called it, "My friend!" However, the bear didn't reply to him at all. It just ran towards him to attack him. Then the hunter and his son quickly ran away. They didn't dare to stop running and reached a river. They swam and crossed the river in order to escape. The bear couldn't swim at all, so it had to use the other way to attack the hunter. Then they arrived at a mountain. The hunter and his son ran straight. The bear chased them in a S-line. But the hunter couldn't run anymore because there was only a ravine in front of him. They encountered each other. The hunter was in panic and just aimed at the bear with his percussion lock firearm. When the bear jumped onto him, he shot it. However, with the speed of the bear's jump, both of them fell into a ravine and died. Then his son slowly rappelled to take the father's corspe. He took both his father's dead body and the bear. He reminded himself and declared, "I will kill the bear anytime or anywhere I see it!" So, the hunter and the bear always attack each other whenever they encounter each other. If your friend is sensitive about using his things, you shouldn't use them. If you don't like it, your friend will not, either.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
