I will tell you why there is no ghoul these days. Once in a village, there was a couple who had a baby boy. They were a poor family. The son was lazy and naughty. He never listened to his parents. One day, while he was playing at a neighbour's house, he found a piece of gold. So he just took it home. He gave it to his parents. They asked him, "Where did you get this gold?" He said, "I just found it under the neighbour's house. Then I took it home." They scolded him, "If you found it there, you should give it to the neighbour. Why did you take it? You are bad!" His mom also said, "You never listen to us! You do what you want all the time! I will beat you today!" He was crying all day. And he took a hoe, a harrow, and some stale, sticky rice. Those seven stale balls of sticky rice were heavy. He was walking along the village streets while carrying that sticky rice. He saw a man on the way and told him, "Grandpa, I am running away from my house because I was beaten hard. Don't you see any caves near here? I want to live there." The man said, "The cave might be on that side." Then the boy kept walking and saw a woman. He asked her, "Grandma, don't you see any caves near here? I'd like to live there." She showed him where to go. Then, as he kept walking according to the woman's direction, he met a boy who was almost the same age as his brother. He asked him, "Brother, do you see any caves near here? I want to live there." He showed him where the cave was. Then the boy walked for a few minutes and saw a cave there. He built a fire and sat down near the campfire, thinking about being beaten. He suddenly became sad. He soon fell asleep and dreamed. In his dream, he saw a ghoul. The ghoul told him, "How did you come to my place!? I hate you! Let's compete against each other." At that moment, he woke up. As soon as he opened his eyes, he saw the big ghoul right in front of him. The ghoul told him, "Let's compete against each other." The poor boy was clever enough to defeat the ghoul. He was shocked at first and couldn't say anything to the ghoul. He was thinking about the plans to defeat it. He could think of a way to use the stale, sticky rice and the hoe. Then he told the ghoul, "If we are going to compete against each other, you must follow what I say. I will decide how to compete." The ghoul looked down on the boy and mocked him, "I could easily defeat you, such a little boy!" He challenged it, "Let's see who will win." He said, "First of all, let's have a competition for eating stones." The ghoul easily thought, "That boy might not be able to eat the stones, not only me!" Then it said, "Okay, fine. Let's compete." The boy just took his hard, sticky rice balls out of his bag. And he said, "I will eat these stones. What about you?" The ghoul picked up the stones and said, "I will eat these stones." Then he said, "Ok, let's start." The ghoul ate the stones as soon as the competition started. Its teeth were automatically broken as it chewed the stones. The ghoul was hurt and cried. It said, "I have been eating meat and bones with these teeth for a long time. But I have never been hurt like this before. My teeth are broken after chewing these stones." Then the boy said, "Now, it's time for me to eat my stones. Look at me. I will eat the stones now." And he ate that stale, sticky rice. He could bite them easily. So the ghoul was totally shocked. As the boy was hungry, he finished all seven sticky rice balls in a short time. He felt full, too. And he said, "Let's compete in the second round. Let's see whose comb is bigger." The ghoul said, "Okay, fine." And it took out its comb. It was a foot-length. Then the boy showed his harrow. He said, "This is my comb." And he put it on the rock. The ghoul was shocked when it saw his comb. It asked him, "How do you use this big comb?" The boy said, "Don't be so inquisitive. Mind your own business. This is my comb. You are lost." The ghoul said, "Okay, I accept the result." The boy said, "Then, let's compete in the third round now. Let's check whose teeth are bigger." Then the ghoul just picked up his broken tooth and showed it to the boy. The boy picked up his hoe and put it on the flat rock. Then the ghoul was shocked when it saw the boy's big tooth. In the end, the ghoul realised, "Human is really wicked! I shouldn't live with them together." It went into the forest and never appeared again. We haven't seen any ghouls since that day. The boy took all of the ghoul's valuable jewellery and gave it to his parents. He made his parents feel pleased, and he spent his life happily with his family.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,449translations are currently available (December 28, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
