Title Shingtai hkan wa a lam (The widower) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a widower in a village. The widower thought, "I have got only one daughter. I think I should get married for the second time." Then, he got married to another woman. He married a widow. She had got a daughter who had the same age as his daughter. The stepmother always bullied her stepdaughter. She fed her only leftover. She didn't let her own daughter do any work. One day, the stepmother told her stepdaughter, "Fill this pillow with the cotton. Don't go anywhere and fill this pillow!" The girl was afraid of her stepmother. She listened to her stepmother and did everything she asked for. She was filling the cotton into the pillow. At that time, the strong wind had blown. Then, the cotton was blown away. She was frightened and thought, "Oh, what should I do? I will be in trouble if I don't fill these pillows. I will be beaten. So, I should catch those pieces of cottons." Then, she went to the place where the cotton was blown away. She was tired after catching the cotton, so she rested under a tree. At that time, she heard a sound. The sound asked her, "What are you looking for, the girl?" She said, "My stepmother ordered me to fill the pillow with the cotton. But then, the wind had blown the cotton away. So, I have been finding the cotton. If not, my stepmother will beat me up. Have you seen those cotton?" Then, the tree told her, "If you want to know where they are, I can let you know. But do me a favour. Clean the place under my tree for people who want to rest. If you do, I will let you know where the cotton is." She agreed, "Okay. I will clean it if you let me know where the cotton is." She cleaned all the dry leaves and rubbish under the tree. The tree told her, "Go to the east. Just go straight, and you will find the cotton there." On her way, she met a goat. The goat asked her, "What are you looking for?" She answered, "I have been looking for my cotton. My cotton had been blown away because of the wind. Have you seen those?" The goat is a kind of animal which eats plants and leaves. It eats any kind of leaves. It is not a picky eater. The goat told her, "Can you get some leaves for me to eat? Then, I will tell you where your cotton is." Then, she picked lots of leaves for the goat. The goat told her, "Your cotton is blown away in that direction." She said, "Thank you," and continued her journey to find the cotton. Later, she reached a house. There was an old lady in that house. Then, she asked the old lady, "Has my cotton been blown and entered your house?" The old lady said, "Do the cleaning if you want to know where your cotton is. I will tell you where your cotton has blown." Then, the girl did all the cleaning and cooking. After the cleaning, the old lady gave her two boxes. The old lady gave her one of the boxes where gold was inside. Then, the girl said, "Grandma, I don't want that gold box. I only want my cotton back." The lady said, "I have your cotton too. This is the box with the cotton in it. I just want to give this gold box to you because you have helped everyone you met on your way. I know how you have helped the tree and the goat. I have kept all the cotton that has been blown in this box. I can give it to you right after you have asked me about it. But I want to test your kindness. Now I know that you are kind and helpful. You always respect others too. You have faced many difficulties and hardships at home. So, I want to give your this gold box and use it when you need it. I don't want you to be bullied, so use this gold and escape from your stepmother. I would like to present you this box." Then, the girl took those boxes and went back home. When she arrived home, her stepmother asked her, "I told you to put the cotton into those pillows! But where did you go?" She answered politely, "When the wind had blown, all these pieces of cottons were blown. So, I went to collect them all. Then, I arrived at the house where the old lady lived. She gave me this gold box." The stepmother asked her, "How did you get to her? Tell me." She wanted her own daughter to go there and get a gold box like her stepdaughter. She asked her stepdaughter, "Tell me how you got there." Then, the girl told her everything she had faced all the way. The next day, she let her own daughter go there. Her daughter arrived at the tree. She asked the tree, "Have you seen my cotton?" Actually, she was not looking for cotton. She was just pretending to find the cotton. The tree told her, "If you want to know where your cotton is, clean the tree." She angrily replied, "I am not your servant! I just want to know where my cotton is. Just tell me about it." The tree told her, "I can't tell you! Just go." When she met the goat, the goat told her the same as the tree. But she reached the lady's house. The old lady knew everything about her. She told her, "Clean the house if you want your cotton." She replied to her, "Do you think I am your servant? I am not coming here to do the chores for you. I'm coming here to get my cotton. I heard you have both the gold box and the cotton box. Give me those boxes." The old lady said, "Okay. Although you didn't do the chores that I asked you to do, I will give you those boxes. Don't open these boxes on the way. Open them when you arrive home." She took those boxes and went back home. When she arrived home, she opened the boxes with her mother. Then, there were only caterpillars inside the boxes. In the end, they had to live as the good girl said. She had lost her mother since she was young. But she was kind, gentle and helpful. She lived her life happily and peacefully.
