Title Hpu lum amyu a lam (Hpu Lum Tu's navel) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I would like to tell you about how close people and Hpu Lum Htu (a nat with many long breasts). A long time ago, there was a family in Nam San Yang. I don't exactly know which clan they belong to. The family lived there. The couple from that family went to the forest to collect some wood. At that time, they met Hpu Lum Htu on their way. Hpu Lum Htu is a kind of nat that has many long breasts. The couple heard that Hpu Lum Htu would do anything for them if they could take her navel. The navel is the most important thing for Hpu Lum Htu. Then, they got her navel and took her home. They buried her navel somewhere in the house secretly and asked Hpu Lum Htu to work. The couple was farmers. Then, they ordered Hpu Lum Htu to cultivate paddies. When we tell our children the story about Hpu Lum Htu, they quickly sit near us because they feel frightened. They believe Hpu Lum Htu is an evil nat with long breasts. Whenever the word 'Hpu Lum Htu' comes out, the children feel scared. Hpu Lum Htu also has her own history of how she turned into that kind of nat. It's not to be frightened. Hpu Lum Htu could work a lot and understand human language as well. When the couple ordered her to look after the cows, Hpu Lum Htu quickly went to the shed and looked after them. When they asked her to farm, she went to the farm and cultivated the rice plants. They told her, "We will give your navel back if you work for us." The whole villagers knew that they had got Hpu Lum Htu. So, they gave that family the name as 'Hpu Lum'. One day, the couple and Hpu Lum Htu went out to look after the cows. While they were looking after the cows, Hpu Lum Htu went back home. She searched for her navel, but she couldn't find it. She thought, "Where did they hide my navel? They have been telling me that they will give it back to me if I work for them. But they just use me! I need to find my navel until I see it." Hpu Lum Htu was not scared of people in the past. Actually, Hpu Lum Htu will live a short life if her navel is missing. When other villagers saw her, she just stood there and stopped finding it. They asked her, "What are you doing there?" She said, "Nothing special. I am just looking for something." Since Hpu Lum Htu is not a human, she has power. A human can work to get 10 bags of rice. But Hpu Lum Hpu can work to get 30 bags of rice. That couple didn't have any family name, so they named their family as Hpu Lum. They announced it to everyone. One day, Hpu Lum Htu searched for her navel while the couple passed out after drinking alcohol. Hpu Lum Htu was searching for it everywhere. She could find it at last. Then, she took it and ran away from that house. She didn't run to the place where humans often went. She ran away from the humans. Since then, we don't see Hpu Lum Htu. She didn't remember anything when she lived with humans. She has only one thing in her mind. She will eat a human whenever she sees one. This is the end of the story.
