I would like to tell you a story. The title of the story is 'how to choose a man'. Once in a village, there were many boys and a few girls. The boys didn't get married. They wanted to get married, but the girls didn't like them. In the past, the girls were dignified and valued themselves so much. They didn't get married if they didn't want to. They didn't look at the boys' money nor appearances, nor education. When a boy asked for her hand in marriage, she touched his hands if they were rough or not. If his hands were rough, she would marry him. The girl just made sure that the boy could work hard. If a boy doesn't work, we can see that his hands will be very soft. His hands can be softer than the girl's. Then, the girls thought, "I can't get married to him. If I get married to him, I have to find food for him. He won't help me." If the boys worked really hard or cut the logs, their hands would not be soft. Then, the girl could decide, "I can marry him. He is hardworking." Then, one of the girls from the village said, "I will get married. The man whom I will get married to is really hardworking and a good man." Her father asked her, "How can you know if he is a hardworking man?" She said, "When I touch his hands, they are rough. That means he works!" Her father told her, "My dear daughter, if you are going to marry him just because of his hands, I will tell you a story." He said, "Listen to me. Once upon a time, there was a girl who would get married to a man because of his rough hands. She is like you. When the girl met that man, she touched his hands and felt they were rough. In fact, he didn't wash his hands since last night when he pounded the sticky rice. The sticky rice was on his hands. Since the rice was sticky and he didn't wash his hands, his hands were rough. Then, that girl thought he was a hardworking and reliable person. So, she got married to him. After getting married, she found out that her husband was just a lazy man. But she couldn't divorce him. She had a rough life to spend." Then, his daughter hesitated, "Will he be the man like my father said. I will ask him first." When she met him, she asked him, "What do you do?" He said, "I am an orphan. I cut the trees down and collect the wood." When they got married, they were happy. The villagers said to the girls, "When you get married, you have to look at the men's hands. If the hands are rough, those men are hardworking." The girls from the village wanted to know about it when their fathers told them, so they asked that girl again. She said, "We can't just look at the men's faces or their appearances. The girls care for their skins more than the boys. The men thought the girls would love them if they had good appearances. So, if we just look at the men's faces, we will regret it. We need to look at their hands." We have been looking at their hands when we choose the men. The girls should choose the men by looking at their hands.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
