Title Matsan ma hte hkawhkam (The snail girl) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell you is about a king and a poor. Once in a village, there was a penniless boy. And there was a prince too. The prince usually bullied the poor. Whenever they went fishing, the poor threw his fishing net behind the prince. One day, there didn't catch any fish in his net. There was only a spiral snail. Since he couldn't catch any fish, he didn't have any money to spend. The next day, he found that spiral snail in his net again. So, he took it home and put it in a pot. Then, he went to the field to work. Surprisingly, he saw a set of rice with meals on the dining table when he came back home. There was no one to prepare meals for him. So, he was surprised. But he ate those meals. The next day when he came back from his work, he found there was a delicious meal for him at home. He wondered, "Who cooked these for me? Who might be?" He decided to catch the person who cooks for him. So, one morning, he pretended as if he was going to work and got out of his house. And he was hiding behind the door. When it was time to cook dinner, the snail turned into a beautiful girl and started cooking. He witnessed it all. He quickly got out from the back of the door and held her tight. He told her, "You can't change into the snail anymore!" Since he told her like that, she couldn't turn into the spiral snail anymore. She had to live her life as a human. The poor boy fell in love with the girl because she was so beautiful. He wanted to take her everywhere he went. But he was afraid that every man would love her. So, he drew a picture of her and took it to the field where he worked. He drew her picture on paper and posted it in front of him. When he looked at her picture, he could finish the work quickly. He adored her so much. He wanted to work hard more when he looked at her picture. One morning, he told her, "Don't go anywhere today. Just stay at home." He was scared if a prince saw her. He was afraid that the prince would take her as a wife. He said sadly, "Don't go anywhere. Just stay at home." Then, he went to the field to plow. While he was working on the field, the wind was blowing hard. The wind was blowing hard and it made his wife's picture fly away. He followed after it. It landed in the king's compound. So, he just went back home sadly. Meanwhile, the king walked around his compound and saw the girl's picture. The king was interested in her and murmured, "Who is it? She is so beautiful. How comes there exists a gorgeous lady on this earth?" So, he ordered his servants to find the girl. He ordered them, "Look at this picture carefully. If you find someone who looks like the girl from this picture, bring her to me." No matter how hard the servants tried to find her, they couldn't find her. The king thought, "This beautiful lady might be from the west." So, he sent his servants to the west to find her. He told them, "When you see this girl, bring her to me definitely." The servants were searching for the girl at the rich's houses first. But they couldn't find her. So, they reported to the king, "We couldn't find her anywhere." Then, the king told them, "This time, find her in the houses that look like a kitchen." The servants were searching for her, but they couldn't find her. Then, the king ordered them to find her in the houses that looked like toilets. No matter how hard they tried to find her, they couldn't find her. They told the king, "My king, the girl might not be from the west." The king told them, "Then, find her in the houses that look like chicken coops." So, they started searching for her in those kinds of houses. In the end, they found the beautiful girl in a house that looked like a chicken coop. They took her to the king. At that moment, the poor boy was working on his farm. He didn't get back home yet. The girl told the servants, "If you are going to take me somewhere, wait a moment, please. There is a man who adores and loves me so much. I want to meet him first before I go." The servants were waiting there. At that time, the poor boy arrived home. The girl told him, "They are going to take me somewhere. After seven days, you come to me. Bring seven different kinds of feathers and wear them on your body. Don't forget to come to me." After that, she went to the king from the east country with the servants. The servants took her to their king. The king loved her as soon as he saw her. So, he planned to marry her after seven days. He decided to marry her royally. On the seventh day, the poor boy prepared seven different kinds of feathers and wore them on his body. And he went to the wedding. Before he got into the royal compound, he had to wait outside the gate for a while. He was preparing to get into the compound as soon as the gate opened. Meanwhile, the king invited many wealthy gentlemen and royal families to celebrate his wedding. When the gate opened, he quickly went into the royal compound. When he arrived there, the king was about to take the bride's hand. Surprisingly, the bride turned into the spiral snail that she was before. The poor boy witnessed everything. Then, he quickly ran towards there and picked the snail up. When he picked it up, it turned into the beautiful lady again. The king was surprised to see that thing. He thought, "This beautiful lady turns into a snail when I touch her. But it turns into the lady again when the poor boy touches her. She turns into the gorgeous lady when the poor boy who can't even afford to nice clothes touches her. How can this happen!? If I can marry her, I will wear that cloth made of feather." Then, he gave his wealth and throne to the boy. And he took the poor boy's cloth. The king decided to change his life with the poor boy's life. He thought that the beautiful lady would marry him, so he happily changed his life with the poor's. He wore the feathers and walked around the royal compound. At that time, the servants saw the man with a feather cloth and said, "A crazy man is walking inside the royal compound!" And they killed him. The poor boy became the king, but the king was killed mistakenly. The public agreed with each other because they thought the boy should be the king. They said, "He deserves to be the king. He deserves to marry this gorgeous lady." The boy and the beautiful girl got married, and the public gave their blessings. Since then, the new king and the queen ruled the country to be pleasant. This is the end of the story.
