I am telling a story about an orphan boy with only a grandmother and Lalaw brothers. Once upon a time, Lalaw brothers bullied the orphan boy and mocked him a lot. When the orphan boy put a trap for birds, the Lalaw brothers were disturbed. They said, "How come you put the trap there? You should put it on the tree top." Then the brothers placed their trap on the tree top. The orphan boy could only put his trap on the ground. In the early morning, when the orphan boy had not come yet, the Lalaw brothers went there. They checked the orphan boy's trap and found a deer was caught in his trap. In their trap, a horn-bill bird was caught. They removed the horn-bill bird from their trap and placed it in the orphan boy's trap. Then they took the deer and brought it to the tree top; after that, they put it in their trap. "Hey, orphan boy, let's go and see our traps," the brothers said, and they went there together. The brothers said, "Oh my! The orphan boy got the horn-bill bird!" The orphan child only brought back the horn-bill bird. The brothers exchanged their bird with the deer before the orphan boy came, and they cut the deer up into pieces. They were so proud of themselves for getting the deer, and they bullied the orphan child like that. They always pushed around the boy. However, the orphan child never got angry. His mind was so good. He was never angry at the two brothers. One day, they went digging the road. All the households from the village had to go to make a public road. The two brothers worked happily with the villagers. The brothers showed the orphan boy when there was a tree root to remove. The Lalaw brothers took advantage of the orphan boy and only worked in an accessible place where they could work more and earn more. They showed and let the orphan boy work in challenging areas so that he worked daily but earned not much. He could get a little money. The Lalaw brothers pushed the orphan boy around. They did the boy like that in digging the road job every day. While building the road one day, they found dog shit under a giant palm tree root. So the brothers showed it to the orphan boy. After showing that, the orphan boy dug and dug the root and cleared the dog shit away. The others worked easily and happily, and they all went home at sunset. The orphan boy was still digging the tree root and left behind. He tried to unplug the root and pulled it out. He found many small pieces of jade stones underneath the tree root. He thought if he showed these to the Lalaw brothers, they would snatch these from him. The boy pretended to feel a stomachache and let the Lalaw brothers go back first. He did not return home and told them, "Please tell my grandma I am so hungry and have stomachaches. Ask her to come to me and bring me medicine for my stomachache and some food." All the people went back as it was getting dark. The grandmother waited for her grandson to return but did not see her grandson, so she asked people who were coming back. However, no one answered her. She waited and waited for her grandson standing outside. The Lalaw brothers might be her neighbor. "Hey, those brothers. Do you see my grandson?" she asked the Lalaw brothers. "We saw him. He said his stomach was in pain, and he was hungry. So he left behind." They did not tell the grandma before she asked. When the grandma heard his grandson had a stomach-ache and felt hungry, she cooked delicious food and brought medicine. Then she followed her grandson in the dark. Her grandson told her to bring a winter melon. The two brothers also told her to bring a winter melon. So the grandmother brought the winter melon and all the other things and followed her grandson. When she met with her grandson, he told her, "Granny, this is the place the Lalaw brothers showed me, and when I plucked the root, I found jades." Then he opened the root and found the brightness of jades. The boy continued, "Grandma, I lied about my pain because I am afraid of snatching by the two brothers. Look! They are so beautiful. Let's cut the white pumpkin into half and take out the pith, and after that, put the jades instead. Then close it up and bring it back home." They all arrived at the palace. The king had a parrot in his palace. The parrot was not welcome, although a guest got into the palace. The parrot did not greet whoever reached the palace. The princess was thinking, "Umm. Whom should I choose?" "Now, the parrot that talks a lot daily does not greet everyone, despite how many guests reach here. I have to consider that." Therefore, she did not choose whoever came to her. Despite how handsome they were and how rich and robust they were, she did not select them. You go there to be a king." Thus, the boy brought his winter melon and put it in a basket for chickens, then went to the palace. He went there wearing a torn shirt and sarong. All the other princes got there before him. He reached there when all the other princes left. When the orphan boy entered, the parrot said, "A good guest is coming. A good guest is coming. Broom the floor. Give him clean water." At that moment, a boy wearing a torn shirt and sarong entered the palace carrying the chicken basket. The princess heard the parrot saying, "A good guest is coming. Bring cold water. Broom the floor." She thought that person would be a special one. Therefore, she chose the orphan boy. After choosing him, the father king was amazed. "Oh my! You did not choose the most handsome boys, but you chose this boy wearing ragged clothes, carrying the chicken basket. What kind of daughter is she?" "What has happened to her?" said the king. The king was so surprised and angry at his daughter. Although he was furious at his daughter, he could not do anything as the princess had selected the boy already. Therefore, the other princes went back to their places. The king asked, "Orphan boy, I don't know why my daughter chose you. How clever are you? What do you have?" The boy responded, "My king, I will show you what I have at night." When the time was getting dark, the boy opened his winter melon, which he cut into half, put jades inside, and showed it to the king. The whole palace was shining and sparkling brightly. When he bent the melon, people saw it and shouted, "The king's palace is burning. The palace is on fire." He covered the winter melon back and opened it again later. The whole palace was shining brightly when it was open. "The king's palace is on fire!" People shouted like that again. Then he covered it again. The king asked him to open and close the white pumpkin three times. After three times, as the jades were of outstanding quality and very precious, the brightness from the jades was like fire. So people shouted on fire. So the king asked him to cover it and said, "Alright, it is enough." The boy said, "My king, I come here bringing these to get your daughter. I don't have anything." The Lalaw brothers did not know what to do as the boy was her grandson. They had to follow the grandma and her grandson to be their maids. The boy brought his grandmother to the palace and brought the Lalaw brothers along to be their servants. The king let her daughter marry the orphan boy when they reached the palace. Then the orphan boy took the place of the king. The orphan boy became the king, so he had the power and wore the king's clothes beautifully. In the end, he lived happily forever.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
