I'm going to tell you about a lousy ghoul who bullied villagers. Once in a village, the villagers lived happily and peacefully. A ghoul had come into the village and started to bully the villagers. He stood at the front of the village and threatened the villagers by saying, "You must treat me to the best milk tomorrow. If not, I will eat all of your children!" They were scared and collected all the milk from their home. The next morning, they went to the ghoul and fed him. He drank all the milk and took a nap under a fig tree. That night, he told them, "You must treat me to chickens tomorrow. I crave chickens. If you don't treat me to chickens, I will eat your children!" They were frightened and caught all the chickens inside the village. The next morning, they fed him chickens. The bad ghoul ate the chickens and took a nap under the fig tree. The next day, the ghoul told the villagers, "I want to eat pork tomorrow. Give me pork tomorrow. If not, I will burn your houses down!" They were so scared. The ghoul had a stick with sharp spikes. He waved the stick and threatened, "I will destroy your houses and belongings!" The villagers were frightened, so they looked for pigs. The next day, they offered pork. After eating it, the ghoul said, "I want to eat beef tomorrow. Give me beef tomorrow! If not, I will destroy your belongings." Then the villagers were looking for cows. They killed the cows and gave beef to the ghoul the next day. After eating beef, he slept. The ghoul bullied the villagers every day. The next day, the ghoul said, "I want to eat sticky rice tomorrow." Then the villagers collected all the sticky rice and steamed it. They added some delicious ingredients to the sticky rice and gave it to the ghoul. The ghoul ate the sticky rice and took a long nap in the afternoon. When he woke up, he threatened the villagers by saying, "If you can't treat me to the food that I ask for tomorrow, I will beat you to death with my stick with sharp spikes!" He continued, "I want to have real honey tomorrow. I even want to have it now. Find it no matter what!" When the ghoul said it to the villagers, they were scared and went into the forest to search for beehives. However, they couldn't find any beehives. Then one boy said, "That ghoul bullies us every day in different ways." There was a beehive in which there was no honey in the east of the village. There were only bees in it. He saw it. And he told the villagers, "Don't worry. I will harvest honey and give it to the ghoul tomorrow. So don't worry, everyone. Just watch the ghoul who will be in trouble tomorrow." The next day, the ghoul came into the village by holding his spiky stick. He asked them, "Where is honey? Won't you give me honey yet?" He was waving his spiky stick while asking for honey. Then the boy said, "I have honey that you crave. I have it." He covered his whole body with fabric, except his eyes. He climbed up the big tree and took the beehive. And then he gave it to the ghoul. He said, "Here! This is honey that you want to have." He put it in front of the ghoul. The ghoul thought that honey was put into a bottle, so he said, "It's honey." And he hit the beehive that was in front of him. It hit it hard with it spiky stick. Then the bees were angrily flying towards the ghoul and chased him. The bees thought, "Who destroys our hive?" At that time, the villagers were already hiding safely. The bees saw only the ghoul, so they thought, "He is the one who destroyed our hive!" They stung him hard. The ghoul shouted in pain, "Who did it to me!?" It ran into the deep forest. Since that day, the ghoul hadn't come back to the village again. The villagers lived happily ever after.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,449translations are currently available (December 28, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
