Title Nampan gawm hte shabrang ma a lam (The Boy and the Flower Pots) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I'm going to tell you is about a boy and a flower pot. A long time ago, there was a rich man in a village. He loved beautiful flowers. So, he planted many beautiful flowers in the pots in his compound. He hired a boy to look after and care for the flowers. The boy's task was just to look after the flowers. One day, while he was weeding the flowers, he accidentally broke one flower pot. When his boss knew that, he was scolded a lot. The rich man scolded him, "You are of no use! I told you just to look after the flowers. But look what you did! You broke the pot! You shall be punished." The rich man scolded him. He apologized to the rich man, saying, "I made a big mistake. I'm so sorry. I'll compensate you." However, the rich man didn't accept his apology. The rich man said, "No! I can't accept your apology! You are useless. You should be punished!" He gave him the death penalty. The boy begged him, "My Lord, spare me, please. Just give me one more day to live. Let me think of a way to survive." Then, the rich man gave him a day to live. The boy was desperately thinking of a way to survive. He thought, "What should I do to get a cancellation of my death penalty?" At that moment, an old man, who was working together with him, came to him and said, "Why are you so depressed? I'll tell you a way to survive." The old man continued, "Let's teach our mean, vengeful rich boss a lesson. You teach him a lesson that I tell you." The old man said, "You break all of the rich man's flower pots." Then, the boy did exactly as the old man said. He broke all the flower pots. The rich man was angry and said, "I gave you the death penalty even when you broke a pot! How dare you break the rest? You don't even regret your action and break all nine pots?" The boy said, "I broke only one pot among ten that I have to look after, my lord. But you gave me the death penalty for that. After me, you still have another worker to look after the rest of the pots. Then, if that person accidentally breaks those pots, you will definitely give him the death penalty. There will be another nine people like me. So, I intentionally broke all those nine pots. No one will have to receive that punishment." The rich man was now aware of his action. He thought, "Umm, the boy is right. He broke only one pot, but I gave him the death penalty. I was wrong." He regretted his action. Then, he told the boy, "I made a big mistake. I shouldn't have given you the death penalty just for that. Although you broke the other nine pots, the punishment I'll give you is only death. I regret it too. So, I will cancel your death penalty." Therefore, it's not good and fair when we give a punishment for a small affair without thinking much. We should let the small cases disappear and not make them bigger. We should have empathy. I share this story to teach each other to have empathy.
