Title Ka-ni a lam (Opium and green tea) with English translation
Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Number ten is a story that was told by our ancestors in the past. They told us about where and how the opium was made, which not only we Kachin people heat but also the whole world does not like it. The opium and the green tea were lovers. The opium and the green tea were a girl and a boy, and they loved very much each other. Although they loved each other very much, the elders said that "You two are the types that cannot marry each other. So, don't marry each other." But, the boy and the girl kept saying that "No, impossible. We have to marry." Thus, the elders said that "We told you that you two cannot marry each other but you don't understand no matter how much we are telling you." So, they arrested the boy and the girl and burned them to death. Soon after, a poppy and a green tea plant were grown in the place the boy and the girl were burned. The green tea plant and the poppy were grown on the stove that the boy and the girl were burned. Our ancestors said that the poppy was the girl and the green tea plant was the boy. Thus, not only we Kachin people but also all people who use opium what usually did was that after they cooked and drank the opium, they always needed to drink green tea according to the story of our ancestors. Until today, the people who used opium are very difficult to stop using opium because they were lovers who loved each other very much even they were burned to death. It is very difficult to stop using opium because the poppy and the green tea plant were grown in the place where the boy and the girl were burned. The story was told us that it happened so.

Grai tsawra rai yang gaw "E nan gaw nmai la nmai wa ai baw hpan amyu re dai majaw gaw hkum la hkum wa" ngu na tsun ai da salang ni. Rai yang she "E wa na la na an gaw nla nmai nwa nmai re" nga na tsun da. Rai yang gaw "Nan gaw nmai la ai nmai wa ai she ngu ai me salang ni dai ram tsun ai nchye na ai gaw ngu nna she rim na she shan lahkawng hpe gaw wan nat kau ai da. Wan nat kau rai yang gaw shan hpe nat kau ai shara kaw wa hpa hka hte e kani tu mat wa ai da wan mang dai kaw. Hpa hka hte kani tu rai yang gaw moi na salang ni hkai ai gaw kani gaw num i hpa hka tu ai wa gaw la shan lahkawng dai hku tu mat wa. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
