Title Kawa hpe htingga hte gun sa kau ai (The abandonment of the father) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The title of the story is 'an abandoned father'. The story is about a son who abandoned his birth father because of his bad wife. Once upon a time, there were an old father and his son in a village. The son was an adult. The father arranged a wedding for his son. And they all lived together. The son loved his father so much. But the daughter-in-law didn't want to take care of her old father-in-law. She pretended like she treated her father-in-law well when her husband was around them. When her husband was not at home, she mistreated her old father-in-law. Since the father-in-law was old, she had to cook for him, wash his clothes and feed him too. She didn't want to do that kind of stuff anymore. So, she nagged her husband every evening, "I don't want to look after your father now. Let's send him somewhere." She kept nagging him every day. In the end, he didn't want to listen to nagging. So, he decided to abandon his father. He weaved a bamboo basket and put his father into it. He took a wrap of rice and water too. And he took his old pity father somewhere far from their house. The old father had been to that place when he was still young. The son left his father there without saying anything. He left the bamboo basket that he put his father in. The father knew that his son had abandoned him. In the evening, the old father thought, "My son will need this basket again. When he is old, his son will need to use it to abandon him." So, he took that basket and went to his son's house with the help of a walking stick. When he got home, his daughter-in-law saw him and shouted at her husband, "You said you had abandoned your father! But now, he is here!" His son came out of their house and asked him, "Dad, why did you bring that basket?" The old father said, "My son, you can't throw this basket. Your son will need it when he abandons you." At that moment, the son regretted his action. He reflected with sadness, "I will be older one day. I abandoned my father just because he is old. My son will abandon me too when I am older. I did really wrong towards my father." Since that day, he treated his father very well and looked after him for the rest of his life. This is the end of the story.
