Description Translation (Gun Mai)
It is a story about an orphaned boy and nine brothers. There were an orphaned boy and nine brothers and they did highland cultivation on the mountain. One day they said to make a farm way so they brought swords and tools. The nine brothers already cleared for the farm way. But, there was a big hard tree that was blocking in the middle of the farm way that they wanted to make. They also could not avoid the tree to make the way because both sides of the way were gorges. They had to cut the tree but the nine boys did not want to do and they just did easy tasks such as clearing grasses. So, they said to the orphaned boy that "Orphaned boy, you dig this tree today." The orphaned boy could not reject the nine boys so they dug the tree with his ax and tool. After he dug the tree and removed the tree a little bit, the orphaned boy found a very bright thing called Seng Lawt. The orphaned thought to himself that "If I remove the whole tree and the nine boys see the bright thing, they will force to take it from me because I can't defeat them." He also could not place back the tree because he already dug and removed quite a lot. So, he pretended to stomachache and laid on his chest and covered the bright thing. Later, the nine brothers called the orphaned boy that "Orphaned boy, let's go home. It is time to go home." "No, I am stomachache now. I can't go home. When you get to the village, please tell my grandmother to bring a water bottle (the bottle was made with a big bottle gourd among the Jinghpaw people in the past) and medicine as I am stomachache." The nine brothers did not care about the orphaned boy. The nine brothers returned to the village. But, among the nine brothers, the elder brothers said that "Let's not tell the grandmother of the orphaned boy about what the orphaned boy asked to bring. They are not important to us. We are just important." But, the youngest brother said that "Anyway, we should tell what the orphaned boy asked his grandmother." "OK, so you go and tell," the elder brothers said. So, the youngest brother went to the orphaned boy's grandmother and said that "Your grandson is stomachache where he dug the tree to clear the farm way and he was laid on his chest. He asked you to bring a water bottle and medicine." Then, the grandmother was shocked to hear and went quickly to her grandson. She also brought what her grandson asked her to bring. When the grandson saw the orphaned boy, she asked worriedly that "What happened to you, my dear grandson?" The grandson answered that "Grandma, I am not sick. I found here a very bright thing called Seng Law. Since I am afraid of the nine brothers that they will forcibly take from me, I laid on my chest and covered it. Bring your water bottle now." Then, the orphaned boy put the Seng Lawt into the water bottle and closed firmly with the cover otherwise, it would bright a lot without the cover and they returned home. They brought it home and stayed for a while. The nine brothers did not know the orphaned boy and his grandmother had the bright thing. So, one day, the nine brothers called the orphaned boy to go for trading that "Orphaned boy, let's ride raft and go for trading. Let's sell the fruits from our village." Then, they rode the raft and went for trading. The orphaned boy broke a pumpkin in the middle and put his water bottle and closed it. The nine boys had a lot of things to trade and the whole raft was full of their goods. The orphaned boy said that "I have nothing to sell and only this pumpkin to sell." Then, they got to the market where they were rich people and kings. The nine brothers traded their goods and happied. The orphaned boy was just holding his pumpkin and staying on the raft. Then, the king asked first that "Are you all who came to trade here? No more people?" "No, we are all," the nine brothers answered. A parrot from the palace then said that "A good guest is in the next. A good guest is in the next." So, the king said that "My parrot said that you still have more people to trade." "No more," the nine brothers answered. The parrot kept saying that "A good guest is in the next." Thus, when the king asked them again, the nine brothers said that "There is no more. There is just only an orphaned boy who is planning to sell a pumpkin." "OK, called him," the king said so the orphaned boy came to the king. The king asked that "What did you bring?" "I just brought this pumpkin," the orphaned boy answered. "What kind of pumpkin," the king asked again. When the orphaned boy openedd his pumpkin, it was extremely bright even like lightning from the sky. The people in the city were yelling that "The palace is burning now." Then the orphaned boy closed his pumpkin, the brightness was stopped. When the orphaned boy closed the pumpkin, the brightness was down and when he opened his pumpkin again, it got bright extremely again. So, the king asked the orphaned boy that "How much do you want for this?" The orphaned boy was just scratching his head because he did not know what to say. Thus, the king said that "Hmmm.... the hair is uncountable. I think the boy wants an uncountable amount for this." The orphaned was staying in the palace and the nine brothers were also still trading. Oh.. sorry. The nine brothers had already returned home. They also did not know about the orphaned boy brought the Seng Lawt and was selling to the king in the palace. After the nine brothers returned to the villager, soon after, the orphaned boy finally returned home. The king gave him a lot of properties including gold, money, and cattle. So, when the orphaned boy was returning home, the cattle bell was making the sound 'Ding...ding...ding'. Thus, the grandmother of the orphaned boy said that "It seems the person coming to the village is my grandson." Then, the nine brothers said that "No, impossible. We are even not sure whether your grandson has died or not. We just left him with only a pumpkin. It must not be your grandson. If the person is your grandson, we will do your slave in your house for the rest of our lives." When the orphaned boy got home, it was the orphaned boy. Thus, as they told, the nine brothers served as slaves whatever there were asked to do in the orphaned boy's house. Because the orphaned boy and his grandmother had money, the grandmother was also getting beautiful because they could eat good food now. But, there was a granary and the orphaned boy used to hit strongly when the nine brothers did not see. The orphaned boy used to hit every morning and also every evening. So, the nine brothers asked the orphaned boy that "Your grandmother is already old. But, why she is very beautiful now even like a girl?" "My grandmother became beautiful because I hit the granary every morning," the orphaned boy said. Thus, the nine boys also thought that "Even if the orphaned boy, only one person hit, his grandmother is more beautiful. If we all nine persons hit our mother, our mother will be more beautiful." So, they hit their mother each time and their mother was dead there.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
