I am going to tell the story about a hag and a woman. A long time ago, witches stayed closer to humans, so the people were challenging to go to and fro at that time. One day, a woman wanted to pick some leaves and went into the woods. When she got into the forest, she found the leaves made into small pieces and rolled up like a mat. They were put in the fork of the tree branches. She was amazed to find that the sticks were cut into short pieces and put at the fork of the trees, then fastened there. "Oh, dear, who is doing this lazy job in such a deep forest? Who could be doing this? Who stuck these here?" saying this, and she spread and threw them around. A while after she had spread them, the hag came to her. When the witch saw the woman destroying her work, she made ready to eat her. But the woman considered, "If she eats me at once and I am eaten like this, it will be meaningless." "Well, I may need to think about it a little bit more," she thought. Afterward, she challenged the witch, "Hey, Hag! Please don't eat me yet. Shall we compete with each other first?" "Tomorrow, bring your child on your back, and I will bring mine too. We will compare whose child is more beautiful. If my child is not pretty, you can eat both of us." "If your child is not good-looking, you both will be eaten too," told the woman. The witch replied, "Yes, sure." She thought that her child was so gorgeous as her child's face was flat and pointed. She indeed brought her child and came back to the tree where the old ladies picked the leaves up the next day. The woman thought carefully again, "If I carry my child, it will not be fine." She subsequently took her white fur dog from her home. She met the hag coming with her dog at their appointed place. The human asked the witch, "You bring your child first and see how pretty she is." When she saw the witch's daughter, she responded, "Oh, it is so hairy. She was so shaggy and not pretty." "My child's face is just a bit flat. Then let's see your child's face, how beautiful she is if you think my child is not pretty." At that moment, she opened her child and showed it to the witch, and the dog was startled. The big dog was startled and barked loudly when it saw the witch as he was trying to attack her. The witch was afraid of the dog, and she ran away when the dog barked. As a result, she left her one hair hooked on the tree. The witch's one single hair was entangled on the thorny tree, so she left her words to the woman, "Friend, please don't take my hair away. It is so precious." "I will come and take it back how long it takes. It is priceless. Don't pick it up and take it." After that, she ran away. The woman waited there for the witch, but she did not return. Her dog also did not come back. So she got the hair and thought, "As it is precious, let me take and keep it." She sat there and waited for her dog to return. Her dog chased the witch away until it reached seven hills and seven defiles, then it came back to its waiting owner. In the end, the woman and her dog were so happy as they both escaped from their danger and got back home safely,

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,426 translations are currently available (October 19, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
