Once upon a time, there was a widow in a village. She had a son. He had a mental illness. He was a halfwit. He couldn't finish any work well. One day, his mother told him, "My son, you don't know how to work and couldn't do anything well. So, you better go to the jungle and be a hunter. You can set traps to catch animals. And you can catch deer and other animals too. Making trap is the easiest, but you need to check it every day." Then, he went to the jungle and set the trap. The next day, he saw that a pheasant was caught in his trap. He was very happy and took the bird from the trap. And he told the bird, "Fly to my house. Tell my mom to kill you and cook the porridge. And tell her that I will be late today." He let the bird go. There was no way the bird would fly to his home. But he didn't know that since he was a fool. At night, he was starving when he got back home. Then, he asked, "Mom! Didn't you cook pheasant porridge?" The mom was surprised and asked, "What are you talking about? Even you just come back now! Where is the bird? What porridge?" The boy said, "I caught a pheasant in the trap today. I told it to go to you and to tell you to cook the porridge for me. And I let it fly." After hearing what he said, his mother told him, "What a stupid boy! How can a bird come to me? If you have caught a bird, take the sword and kill it first. Then, take it home. You can't release a bird like that." The next day, the foolish boy went to the forest to check his trap again. There were lots of mushrooms growing in his trap. The boy remembered what his mother said and cut all the mushrooms into pieces with his sword. And he packed the pieces of mushrooms with banana leaves. He gave the pack to his mother. When his mother saw the pieces of mushrooms, she said, "My son, mushroom can't fly and can't walk. You have to pack this kind of things carefully in the leaf and take it home." The next day, the boy went to the jungle again. Then, he found a beehive on a tree. The boy thought, "This is also a kind of food. So, I should pack this in the leaf carefully." He searched some leaves to wrap the beehive. And he grabbed it. At that time, the bees were coming out and stung him. His face and hands were swollen. And he went back home. His mom was shocked to see him and asked, "What had happened?" He said, "As you said, I should pack something edible with leaf. So, when I found the beehive, I tried to wrap it with a leaf. Suddenly, the bees came out and stung me." She said, "Oh, my boy! You can't do like that. If you found the beehive, you have to burn it first and make them run." The next day, the boy went to the jungle again. On his way, he saw a grandpa from nowhere was sleeping in a hut. The grandpa was wearing a turban. The turban was black and had a similar colour to the beehive he saw yesterday. So, he thought it would be the beehive. Then, he lit the fire and burnt the turban. The grandpa woke up in shock. And he took his sword out and waved it. Then, it hit the boy, and he got wounds. When he came back home at night, his mother asked him, "Oh! What happened!?" He angrily replied, "Mom, you said I have to burn the beehive first! After that, I could take bee broods and honey home. I met a grandpa today, and he was wearing the black turban. I have mistaken the turban for the beehive. So, I brunt the turban with flambeau. At that time, the grandpa was shocked and hit me with his sword." After hearing what he said, his mother told him, "Oh, my naive boy, you should not do like that to the elders. You should greet them politely and treat them well the next time." The following day, he went to the jungle again. This time, he saw a sleeping lion. He remembered what his mother said. So, he went closer to the lion and greeted politely by touching it, "Oh lord! Where are you coming from?" The lion was shocked when the boy touched it. So, it ran away from there. Since that day, people started doing the same as the boy did when they saw the lion. People say, "Lord of the jungle! You are the lord of the jungle. You are the strongest. We need to find food for us, and you need to find yours too. Let's go to the place where we need to go without hurting each other."

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
