Translation (Seng Pan)
There lived a father and a son. The mother isn't mentioned in the story. The father and the son cultivated the rice in a paddy field. Among the rice plants, some were erect. Some were oblique. Therefore, the son said, "Dad. The rice plants which are drooping seems stupid. Those powerful plants are standing upright. Aren't they mighty, Dad? Do the other plants have to bend down since they are weak?" Then, the father replied, "Oh No! Son. As you say, the drooping rice plants aren't mighty but they are full of grains. Therefore, they are bending down. They have reached full growth. What you say that the erect rice plants are powerful might be true but there is no rice grain if you open the seeds of those plants. Therefore, some educated people are humble regardless of their wisdom. Some are not educated, but they are full of themselves. The two different rice plants are the same as those people. Although some people have a wide range of knowledge, they are down-to-earth. On the other hand, there are some uneducated people who are modest and respect others. That's a precious thing. If a wise person is lordly, that person is worthless. Some don't have much knowledge, yet they act like they know everything. That kind of person is also useless. The rice plants, which are drooping and full of grains, are much valuable. The same as it, a person who is knowledgeable and humble is a treasure. Moreover, those who are down-to-earth although they are not wise are also priceless." The father explained to his son.
