A long time ago, there lived an old couple. They had three children. And they were all girls. One day, the old couple went to a stream for fishing. When they were catching fish, they found a big papaya drifting down the stream. They were so happy and took it back home. A huge snake followed after them. Since it chased after them, they ran constantly. The snake was the owner of the papaya. Soon the old couple arrived near a tree in the forest. They said, "Tree. If the snake asks you, don't tell it you saw us. Just say you don't know." And they fed the tree a little bit of papaya. When the old couple got to another place, they found a rock. "Rock. A snake would come and ask you about us. Just say you didn't see us," the couple requested the rock and fed it a bit of papaya. They continued running, and soon, they arrived at their home. The snake asked the tree, "Have you seen the old couple?" "No, I haven't," the tree answered. Then, the snake passed by the tree. When it saw the rock, it asked, "Have you seen an old man and woman?" "No, I haven't seen them. My friend," the rock replied. As the snake continued searching the old couple, it finally found out their house. The snake constricted the wife. "Give me back my papaya!" the snake said. "We have already had it. I will give you my eldest daughter. Please unbind me a bit!" the wife said the snake. Then, the snake loosened the wife up slightly. When the couple promised the snake to offer their second daughter, the snake unbound the wife a bit more. But when they said they would give their youngest daughter, the snake freed the wife. Their youngest daughter was a pretty girl. The snake was fond of her. The couple also had to offer the three daughters to the snake as they promised. At night, the snake shed its skin and transformed into a man. After that, he went up to the sky and spent time with the spirits. At that time, one of his wives, the youngest daughter, woke and saw the snake's skin. She burnt it out. Since the man felt so hot, he came down to his house. And he found out his skin was missing. So, he had to live in the form of a man. He did trading for a living. He travelled by ship to trade. On the other hand, the two elder sisters were jealous of the youngest sister. The eldest sister said, "My sister. I will swing for you." She let her sister sit on the swing and pushed her hard. The youngest sister fell into the water. "Help me! Help me!" the girl cried. Then, a huge bird heard her and carried her to its nest. The bird took care of her by catching the fish. As she lived on, she gave birth to a child. The bird loved the baby so much. One day, the man's ship arrived back at the village. The girl saw him and shouted from the tree. Her husband also heard her and climbed up the tree. "I will bring her back," the man said to the bird, Pallas's Fish Eagle. "Please don't take her back! I can catch the fish till this nest is full of it," the bird said. "Ok! Then I will give her to you," the man replied. Then the bird caught the fish and left them. And the man brought his wife and the child to the home. He kept them in a big basket and covered them with the goods. When the man arrived at home, the eldest sister said, "When she was swinging, the swing's rope was broken. She fell into the water and passed away." When the baskets on the ship were carried out, the elder sister put the basket which her youngest sister and the baby were hiding in on her shoulder. "It's quite heavy," she said. The baby urinated. And the eldest sister's shoulder was wet with the baby's urine. "Is this liquid your perfume?" she asked the man. While she opened the basket, she saw her youngest sister and the baby. She was not happy that her youngest sister was back. So, the eldest daughter said, "Mom and Dad. Find a snake prince like him for me!" Her parents went to the forest again. On the way, they saw a huge snake and took it back home. At night, the parents put the eldest daughter and the snake in a room. The snake planned to swallow the daughter. "Mom! The snake's swallowed my legs. It's up to my knee," the daughter cried. "Because it loves you!" the parents replied from outside. Next time, the daughter shouted again, "Mom! It's up to my waist." However, the parents only replied, "Because it loves you." Soon, the daughter cried again, "Mom! Now it's up to my chest." The parents replied the same as before. After a while, the snake swallowed till her neck. After it, the parents didn't hear from their daughter anymore. The next morning, when they went into the room, their daughter was missing, and the snake laid there with a huge belly. The parents realized that the snake had already swallowed their daughter. So, they said the youngest daughter's husband, "Help us! Save our daughter!" The youngest daughter also said, "Honey. Please save my sister!" "You know that I would transform into the snake again if I touch the snake's blood," the man replied. "Please help us without touching the blood!" the parents said. Since the man couldn't deny them, he cut the snake's belly. His body was stained with the snake's blood. They could save the eldest daughter. However, the man turned into the snake again and went into the forest. His wife also followed after him. When the snake was going to harm the girl and her baby, she showed her baby. When the snake saw the baby, it ran to a river.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,426 translations are currently available (October 19, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
