The title of the story I am going to tell is 'a widow and her son'. Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son. They loved each other so much. They were daily wagers and didn't have any savings. They loved each other so much, although they were penniless and had nothing. One day, they went fishing because they didn't have any curry to eat. While she was preparing to go fishing, the son didn't listen to his mother. The mother told him, "Go to school, my son. I will go fishing." However, the boy didn't listen to his mother. She told him, "Go to school so that you will be educated." He was just naughty and said, "I don't want to go to school. I will follow you to go fishing." She scolded him, "No, you can't! You must go to school." Then he said okay and stayed at home. In fact, he lied to her. The mother thought her son went to school, so she went fishing peacefully. Actually, her son didn't go to school. The whole day, he was playing with his friends without going to school. When the mother came back home in the evening, she asked him, "My son, did you go to school today?" He just said, "Yes, I did." He lied to her. She kept asking him, "What did you learn today?" He answered, "The teachers taught us only Myanmar, but just a few lessons." She thought her son was well-behaved and listened to her. They cooked dinner and ate it together. The next morning, the mother told her son, "My son, go to school like yesterday. Listen to me, alright?" She also praised him a lot. But the boy didn't go to school. She thought her son was well-mannered and told him, "I will catch some prawns for you today." They had to find food every day. He said, "Okay, mom." She was thinking, "My son really listens to me. He is such a good boy. He suddenly listens to me well." Then she felt doubt and followed her son secretly. He didn't even take his bag and ran somewhere. He wore his school uniform and ran somewhere. Then the mother thought, "Is he going to school or skipping school?" She followed him and knew that he was lying to her. He was actually playing with his friends. She thought, "You are just lying to me." But she didn't want to get angry at him. She loved him, so she didn't want to get mad at him. When the boy arrived home, he saw his mom and asked her, "Mom, didn't you go fishing today?" She said, "Yes, there was not much fish today. So I came back home early." She asked him, "Did you go to school, my son?" He said, "Of course I did. Soon after you left, I changed my clothes and went to school." She told him, "I know whether you went to school or not." He asked her, "How?" She told him, "I followed you today because I wanted to know if you really went to school or not. But you were playing with your friends without going to school. Why did you lie to me?" He said, "If I tell you honestly, you will definitely beat me. I am afraid." She comforted him: "Next time, listen to me and go to school, alright?" He promised her that he would go to school. The next day, the mother went fishing again. While she went fishing, her son didn't go to school and played with his friends. In the evening, there was a strong wind. It was really windy. That evening, he went to his friend, who lived in another villlage and was playing there. On the other hand, the mother thought about her son when there was a strong wind. So she went back home quickly. But her son was not at home. She was shocked and went out to find him. But she couldn't find him anywhere. She thought, "My son might follow me." So she went to the river and looked for him. He was not there either. Unfortunately, the mother drowned because of the strong wind while she was looking for him near the river. When the boy arrived home after playing, he didn't see his mom and felt afraid. He was crying out loud and upset. No one cooked for him, and he was alone at home. He missed his mom so much and was crying all the time.

Gaida yen nu yen lani mi hta da shan nu 2 gaw sihtu ni nlu ai majaw oh hka de nga sa hkwi na hku nga. Nga sa hkwi she shi na kasha gaw kanu na ga n madat ai da. Ga nmadat na she ma e nang jawng sa u, a nu nga naw sa hkwi na ngu tsun na hku nga. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
