Here is the story about the origin of jealousy. This story told us how human beings appeared to feel envy from the jealousy that started. There were two brothers called "Hkaigam and Hkainaw". Their mother built a raft for the siblings at the headwater of the River Mali "Mali Hka". The mother also prepared things for them. The raft was heading in two directions, Hkaigam was in the west part of the raft, and Hkainaw was in the south part of the raft. The brothers separated into the west and the south. Hkaigam reached one place and married a mother monkey after parting with his brother. He married the mother monkey, and they had baby monkeys. He had to find food like fruits and vegetables for the monkey family as the mother monkey led him. At that time, Hkainaw got the south part of the river called "Lagat Yang’ village. There was a giant banyan tree in that "Lagat Yang" village. Many creepers were reclining on that banyan tree. In that Lagat Yang village, there also was a wicked corpse-eater eagle. That eagle snatched and ate a child a day and it became mighty day by day. That eagle built a nest on the top of that big banyan tree as it was so strong in that village. The big knife which was put by Hkainaw’s mother in the raft was with Hkaigam. So Hkainaw did not have a knife with him as it was with his brother. Actually, his mother also put the crossbow in the raft before they left. The wicked eagle which lived on that giant banyan tree ate the people every day so the villagers really wanted to kill it. There was no way for them to kill it even though they truly desired to kill it. They did not know how to shoot that eagle. The villagers knew Hkainaw was the owner of that crossbow as they did not know how to use it. The villagers also said that as Hkainaw was the possessor of that crossbow, only he could kill the eagle which lived on the highest part of the banyan tree. They came and talked to Hkainaw, and he replied that he could because that eagle did many bad things to the many villagers, and he would kill it. Hkainaw said, "Alright, just show me that banyan tree." But he still could not kill yet. At the beneath of the banyan tree, the creepers climbed up along the tree and blocked up, so it obstructed to shoot and make it fall down. The way was so cramped, and they could not make the shooting. Therefore, they decided to cut down the creepers and let them die. But they still needed a big knife. Hkainaw remembered about the big knife and said, "Now, I don’t have the big knife." "It was with my brother. So I have to find him." Hkainaw replied the villagers. The villagers replied to him, "Go and find your brother." He made a way to find his brother and found a mother monkey. That mother monkey was looking for food. Hkainaw asked the mother monkey, "Hey, mother monkey, I want to cross the west side of the river. Is the river shallow or deep? - as the water was quite wide. He repeated, "How deep is the river?" The mother monkey answered, "Deep deep shallow shallow." He asked again, "I want to cross the other side of the river, I want to know how deep the river is?" As a consequence, they could see the eagle’s nest at the top of that tree. As they could see and knew they could shoot, the crossbow holder Hkainaw shot that wicked corpse-eater eagle. That eagle fell off and died on the ground, and there was a "Tipwat" tree growing at the place where the eagle fell. The eagle's body perished and at that place, the "Tipwat" tree was coming out. The villagers lived there peacefully after the "Tipwat" tree was growing. The villagers worked at the farm for their living. While they were going back and forth to the farm, the passers-by in the morning saw the leaves ramified from that tree and picked and ate them. They said, "These mushrooms are so delicious and so tasty." No more leaves were clinging as the morning group ate them. So the next group in the evening plucked the mushroom roots and ate them. "Wow, they are so nice and delicious. These are only roots. If we can eat the leaves, they could be so tasty," they were so jealous of who could eat the leaves in the morning. The morning group said, "Such yummy mushrooms! We could only eat the leaves. If we can eat the big stem, it could be tastier." And they felt jealous of who ate the stem. They envied each other as to who ate the stem and who ate the leaves. From that time onwards, jealousy began from that Tipwat tree until today among our human beings. Even though we are rich, we want to get more and the greediness and enviousness started from there.
