Title Shinglet galu ai gaw n kaja ai ladi galu ai gaw kaja ai (The long tongue is bad and the long nose is good) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The title of the story is 'nosy is bad, whereas long nose is good'. Once upon a time, there was a boy in a village. In the past, people compared boys with the bravest and strongest animal, lions. It was because boys were dignified. So, they compared boys with lions. The boys were like the lions because they were brave and strong. And there was a man who lived near the valley. Let's just say he was brave like a lion. He didn't dare go near the people. It was because he had a long nose. He was embarrassed to get laughed at. One day, a man from the village travelled to find salt. He kept walking and walking. Then, he met that man who had a long nose. He asked him, "Why do you have such a long nose?" The old man said, "Having a long nose is good, whereas being nosy is bad." He said, "No, I don't ask you that. I mean why you have a long nose." Then, the old man said, "My ancestors have very long noses. So, I have a long nose too." Then, the traveller laughed out loud. He said, "Hhhh, what's wrong with this village? In my village, we compare the boys with the lions because they are strong. Boys are strong enough that people call them as lions. But, you have a long nose. It's so funny." The old man was upset and said, "Don't tell anyone about this. Promise me, please." The traveller agreed not to tell about him and went back to his village with the salt. When he reached home, he told his wife, "My wife, I have met an old man with a very long nose at the valley while I was going to find the salt. Don't tell anyone about this." The next day, the wife told one of her best friends, "You know my husband has met an old man with a very long nose." Later, the news was spread to the whole village. The villagers told him, "We want to see that man with a long nose. Call him! Call him!" He didn't know what to do, so he called all the villagers and went there to meet the man with a long nose. Then, they all went there. It was a long journey. When they stopped at a place, the villagers told him to go there first and brought the man with a long nose back to them. He really didn't want to go there alone, but he had to. Then, he met that man and took him to his village. Since he was nosy, all the villagers knew about the man with a long nose. The old man told him, "I have already told you not to tell about me to anyone. Being nosy is not good, whereas having a long nose is fine. Having a long nose is fine. See! I can have a piggyback on your back too. For you, you have to give me a ride and feel exhausted." This is the end of the story. I just would like to tell you that Kachin people have those kinds of proverbs and sayings.
