Title Kahtan kaw mi tai mi sha tu ai nat (A baby whose face should not be seen) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I will tell is about a nat that has only one eye on her forehead. That nat is a girl. Once upon a time, there lived a gorgeous girl in a village. She is the most beautiful girl in the village. One day, she was chosen by a nat spirit to be his wife. She had to live with that nat. On the other hand, the villagers were worried and searched for her because she was missing. Then, they found the girl sitting on a rock slab somewhere in the forest. They tried to take her to the village back, but they couldn't. They saw that the girl was peaceful and happy. So, they just went back to the village. One day, the girl went to her parents' house in the village. Her parents were farmers. When it was time to grow rice plants, she told her parents, "Mum, I will help you in growing rice plants. I will bring many people to help you. So, just bring lots of tools." Then, her mother said, "Alright." She packed a lot of food and many tools to the field. When she arrived, her daughter told her, "Mum, look after my baby. But don't look at him. I will plant rice plants there with my workers." The mother said, "Okay," and carried the baby on her back. She was thinking while taking care of the baby, "My daughter told me that she would bring many workers to grow the rice plants, but she came there alone." The work had been done a lot. During lunchtime, the daughter gave food to someone. But the mother couldn't see anyone. After that, the daughter went back home with her baby. A few months later, it was time to harvest. The girl, who got married to the nat, helped her mother at that time too. She gave her baby to her mother and said, "Don't look at my baby, mom." The mother asked, "Why shouldn't I?" The daughter said, "Just don't look, mom." She harvested the crops with her nat friends. But there was no one in her mother's eyes. Her mother thought, "She always told me that she would bring many workers, but there was no one. Many crops have been harvested. Something is not right." When it was time to clean the field, the daughter said, "I will come and help you clean the field, mom." And she told her mother to look after her baby while she was working. After three or four times she helped, her mother was curious and really wanted to take a look at the baby. One day, the mother took a sneak peek at the baby. She was shocked and surprised. She saw that the baby had only one eye on his forehead. So, she quickly looked away. But her daughter knew that her mother peeked at the baby. The daughter said, "Mom, I told you not to look at the baby. You looked at the thing that you shouldn't. I can't come to help you anymore now. Why did you look at him? I can't help you now, mom. I can't come and meet you too. Build a chicken coop tonight. And clean the house too. Build many bamboo baskets as well." Her mother was frightened when she saw the baby's unusual appearance. And she didn't care about what her daughter said. She thought, "Nothing to do with that big chicken coop." Then, she built just a small one. She put it under the house and went to the field. When she came back, she saw there were many cows and deer on the village's football field. There were just a few cows and deer in her coop. She thought, "What is happening?" Then, she went inside her house. She found there was much gold. Actually, her daughter and son-in-law (a nat) gave her as a bridewealth. They gave her gold and many animals. But the mother didn't build a big coop. Most of the animals went into the forest. So, the mother got only a few animals. Since that day, her daughter couldn't come to them and help them anymore because she didn't listen to her.
