Title Hpyi su ai la a lam (The man possessed by a spirit) with English translation
Description Translation (by Seng Pan)
This story is about a warlock (or "hpyi su ai la" in Jinghpaw, which literally means "a man possessed by a spirit"). Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl in a village. There also lived a handsome man who was born a warlock. (He was a kind of witch whose soul could turn into animals.) She was enamored with him. Day after day, their love grew stronger. They dated and had conversation every night. As days passed by, their love became firm. So, they constantly met every night. But one night, he didn't appear. That night the girl saw a caterpillar came to her bed while she was enthusiastically waiting for him to arrive. The next day, when they met, the girl said, "I was waiting for you the whole night. Why didn't you come?" He answered that he had come. But the girl insisted that he didn't appear. In the day time, when she met the man, he was handsome and young. He told her that he would come that night. So, she was waiting him again. That night, the caterpillar came again. This time she pushed it off with a branch. In the morning, she blamed him, "You lie me again!" "No! I came to you last night," he refused. "No, you didn't," the girl insisted. Therefore, one night, she prodded caterpillar with fire. After that night, the man didn't come and meet her even in the day time since he got hurt. On the other hand, she had also got doubts on him. However, after three days the man came to her and said he would come that night. But actually, he didn't come. Only the caterpillar showed up. This time, it climbed on her body and stuck on her boob. She was so afraid and removed it but it stuck intensely. Although how hard she tried, she couldn't unglue it. Then she suddenly remembered what her parents said about the witch which could turn into animals. Therefore, she ran to a stream. There was a bridge. The water was flowing roughly. The girl thought that the caterpillar would be a spirit because she tried in several ways to remove it but it just stuck strongly. So, she realized she should do something wisely to know exactly whether it was a spirit or just an insect. Then suddenly she saw very beautiful Rhododendrons on the bank of stream. She stood in the middle of the bridge and said, "The Rhododendrons on the other side of stream bank are so beautiful. I want to wear it." Although the man transformed into caterpillar, he wanted to fulfill her wish since he loved her so much. So, he looked up where the flowers were. That time, the girl shook off the caterpillar quickly. And it dropped into the water. Suddenly, the spell on her eyes faded away and she saw the one that she shook off was not the caterpillar, it was her beloved boyfriend. She had also seen that he was wearing a Kachin shoulder bag and sword. He drifted down the stream. Therefore, till today the parents always remind their children not to date the person like the warlock. A story was made that you cannot fall in love with someone with a magic spell.
