The story I'm telling you is about two orphan siblings. Once upon a time, there were two siblings in a village. The elder brother had a big body, but he was lacking in intellectuality. He was quite stupid. The younger brother was intelligent and sharp. The elder brother couldn't decide anything by himself. He did everything, as his younger brother said. He always agreed with his brother. He just followed his younger brother's words. When they were grown men, the younger brother told his elder brother, "We are grown-ups now. You don't need to do as I said. Try to live your life according to your own decisions. So let's work in separate fields." While they were working separately, the elder brother asked his younger brother, "I have finished cleaning my field. What should I do next? What should I grow?" The younger brother said, "Oh, you should scrape the buffalo's horns and spread them on your field." The elder brother didn't have any reasoning, so he really scraped the buffalo's horns and spread it all over his field. On the other hand, the younger brother grew yams, taros, and corn in his field. When it was time to bear fruit, the elder brother asked him again, "What kinds of vegetables or fruits are bearing in your field now?" The younger brother said, "Yes, some red, white, and green." He asked, "What about yours, my elder brother?" The elder brother answered, "Lots of heads." Then the younger brother wondered, "What are those? What kind of plant is that?" He was jealous of him and went to his elder brother's field to check what those heads truly were. He saw a lot of buffaloes and cows. The buffaloes were all big. There were only corn and other crops in his field. Then he thought, "There are many buffaloes and cows in my brother's field. They are all his." He couldn't hide his jealousy. He thought to deceive his brother, so he grounded some rice. And he mixed it with water. After that, he spread it onto the buffaloes and cows. The colour of the buffaloes turned white. Then he told his brother, "My brother, all white buffaloes and cows are mine. Only black buffaloes are yours." The elder brother said, "Alright. The white ones are all yours." At that moment, there was a heavy rain. The rain washed the rice powder on the buffaloes. Some ran towards the big trees to get shelter from the rain. Then the rice powder was not completely washed, and the colour of their bodies was variegated. Most buffaloes and cows changed back to their original black colour. The elder brother was deep in thought, "My younger brother told me that all white buffaloes were his buffaloes, but now they are black. He is trying to deceive me for sure." He felt angry with the thought, "My brother is deceiving me." When it was raining, the rice powder was completely washed. At that time, the elder brother was angry and thought, "My brother is intentionally trying to lie to me." So he cursed his younger brother. Some buffaloes and cows were variegated with rice powder after the rain. After that heavy rain, there was no rice powder on the animals. Then the younger brother couldn't get any buffaloes or cows, although he claimed that the white ones were his buffaloes at first. Since all animals turned into their original black colour, the elder brother owned all of them. Meanwhile, the younger brother was overloaded with jealousy and thought, "It shouldn't be! My brother has many buffaloes and cows. I can't let it happen." Then he thought of a way to kill his own elder brother. One day, he asked for help from his elder brother: "My brother, your sister-in-law is dead. Let's go into the forest to find the wood and make a coffin for her." Both of them went into the forest. Soon, they started making the coffin. But the younger brother intended to kill his elder brother. He told him, "My elder brother, will it fit for your sister-in-law? Why don't you lie down inside it to see if it is fit for her?" As soon as the elder brother lay down, the younger brother closed the lid and tied it tight. He tied the coffin and the lid tight by using some bamboo strips. He intentionally did it in order to kill his elder brother. At that moment, the elder brother, who was inside the coffin, shouted to open the lid. But no one opened it. Then he kicked the lid hard. The lid was open, and he was safe. He sadly thought, "He was trying to kill me." Then he told his younger brother, "Why don't you lie down inside it too? Let's see if it fits." As soon as his younger brother lay down in the coffin, he tightly tied the coffin and the lid by using the bamboo strips. He was thinking, "My younger brother tried to kill me by tying the coffin and the lid tight. Moreover, he told me that the buffaloes in my field were all his. He is wicked and trying to deceive me. I won't open the lid." After some time, the younger brother shouted, "Brother, open it." But the elder brother didn't open it. He was panicking and kicked the lid hard. His elder brother could kick the lid, but he couldn't open it. The bamboo strips were tied tightly. The elder brother thought, "Just die there." Then he carried the coffin to a waterfall and put it at the top of the waterfall. Maybe he was thinking of saving his younger brother if he regretted it. Four or five days later, the elder brother went to the waterfall, where he put the coffin. He saw that the coffin was still tied to the tree. Then he told a squirrel, "Go and check that coffin. Check if the person inside is dead or alive. Knock the coffin and tell me if you hear anything." But the squirrel heard, "Cut the coffin down from the tree at the top of the waterfall." It misheard what the elder brother said. So it cut the bamboo strip down, which tied the coffin to the tree. The coffin fell into the waterfall, and the younger brother was dead. He was dead after falling into the waterfall. We, the Kachin people, believe in and worship nats. A person who died a violent death became Nsu nat. When the younger brother died, he became Nsu nat. We, the Kachin people, still worship Nsu nat. We believe that Nsu nat exists. Worshipping and giving offerings to nat is a kind of tradition. There are different kinds of nats such as Hka nat (water) or Jan nat (sun). Since the younger brother spread the rice powder on the buffaloes and cows, they have that kind of variegated colour. Since then, the buffaloes and cows have had a mixture of white and black colours.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
