I am telling a story about why we should not sleep at an abandoned house. Two businessmen came out from their town to do business. They passed many towns to trade and traveled for business. One day, they could not reach the city. Although it was getting dark, they could not enter the town, so they passed the graveyard. When they passed the graveyard, a friend said to another, "My friend, I heard from our ancestors that we can sleep in the cemetery." "Therefore, let's just sleep at the graveyard." The other friend responded to his friend, "My friend, I don't dare to sleep at the graveyard. I am scared." As a result, the two men traveled together but had different thoughts and understanding. Thus, one man thought, "I will move forward as there might be an old village. I will sleep in the old village." The first man said, "My friend, I have heard that we should not sleep at an abandoned house in an old village. Let's just spend the night at the graveyard." The other man replied, "I am afraid to spend the night at the cemetery." So one man left at the graveyard to rest, and another kept going to the abandoned hamlet where no one was staying. Then, he went into the house to sleep. At midnight, the one at the graveyard fell asleep deeply, and he heard noises. He heard a hubbub of people, and they came and talked to him. They said, "Hey friend, let's go to the village over there to find some meat." The one sleeping at the graveyard said, "Oh, I will not follow tonight. I have a guest." He fell asleep again after the crowd passed him. When the sun rose, the man woke up from the graveyard and packed his things the following day. Then he talked nicely at the grave he slept last night, "I can sleep soundly and rest last night. I thank you for helping me. I am leaving now." After that, he continued his journey. When he reached the abandoned house, his friend left his head only. The spirits tore him apart and ate him all. The Kachin people talked about it. The ancestors retold that story to their grandchildren until recent days. People should not sleep in an abandoned house. We could rest at the graveyard. People who slept at the cemetery might have nothing to happen and could overcome the night nicely. We can hear and see that people teach about it these days.
