Title Gwi kanu a lam (The dog mother) with English translation
Description Translation (Htoi San)
I am telling a story about a mother dog that had two human daughters long ago. The two daughters of the mother dog were so pretty when they grew up. The first daughter Ma Kaw married a king. The second daughter became a poor man's wife. The mother dog was tired of finding food as she was getting old and did not want to move by herself. "I have children, so I will go and ask for unwanted food from Ma Kaw as she is the king's wife. I am going to pick the food there." Then she went to Ma Kaw's place. But people from her first daughter chased her. So she could not have anything to eat. She requested the guard to meet and left the message, "I want to meet the king's wife." In ancient times, animals could talk with humans. "I want to see the queen," asked the mother dog, so a messenger brought her message to her daughter. "My Queen! An old dog is talking about meeting the King's wife," told the messenger. When she heard about it, she definitely knew that it was her mother. "I don't need to meet her. I don't need to see and talk to her," replied the messenger. As a result, her mother dog was so sad and hungry that she went back home. After she went to the King's wife three times, she thought of going to her second daughter, "I may need to go to Ma Lu." She approached her first daughter three times, thinking, "My daughter might change her mind and feed her," but it ended with people chasing her. She was sorrowful and went to her second daughter to see how. Although her second daughter was so poor, Ma Lu greeted her warmly, "Come, come. My mother! Please come." Ma Lu warmly welcomed and treated her mother nicely and fed her deliciously until she was full. She took care of her mother, so the mother dog stayed with her until she was older and passed away. Before she died, she told her second daughter, "My beloved daughter, bury me in your yard." "Alright, my mother," Ma Lu promised after that mother dog passed away. Ma Lu obeyed and did what her mother told her, then buried her where she wanted to. After some time, a fruit tree grew in her buried place. That fruit tree bore many fruits, giving any fruits people wanted to eat. If you wanted to eat oranges, the tree took oranges. If it was a time for apples, it bore apples. So Ma Lu sold the fruits from her tree, and she became rich. Meanwhile, Ma Kaw, the King's wife, became poorer and poorer, so she came to her sister Ma Lu. "Hey, Ma Lu, I am penniless now. Could you please tell me how you got rich?" asked Ma Kaw, and Ma Lu answered, "I am selling the fruits from the tree over there." "Could you please let me pick and sell those?" requested Ma Kaw, and "Alright, you can pick and carry as many as you can. That tree never stops bearing fruits, even how many we pick from it," Ma Lu generously gave. The elder sister went to pick the fruits, and they went up to a higher place so she could not pluck those fruits. When the younger sister plucked the fruits, they stayed lower, and she just picked and put them in the basket quickly. When Ma Kaw went and took them, the fruits stayed higher and higher. "What's wrong with it?" amazed Ma Kaw and asked, "Where do you get this fruit tree?" Ma Lu answered, "My old mother's dog told me to bury her there when she was old and passed away. The tree grew from the place where my mother was buried." The elder sister realized, "Ahh, I did not treat my mother well when she needed to." "So, my mom did not want to give fruits even though this tree bears many fruits. I cannot get those fruits, and I became poorer." She went back home with an incredible feeling of sorrow. The end of the story.
