Translation (Htoi Awng)
I am going to tell a story which had been said by our ancestors. I am going to tell about Manau. Long time ago, Kachin ancestors did farming and lived happily. One day, the hunters went into the jungle to catch some animals. There, they saw that the birds were dancing in the sky. A long tailed shrike and a racket tailed drongo led the dance, and other birds were following them. They wondered what the birds were doing. After they had caught some animals, they came back to the village. They cooked the meat and ate happily. And they thought to try dancing Manau dance one day. Then, all the villagers and family members tried dancing it. In the past, people worshipped Nat spirits. They named about two and three kinds of Manau dance at that time. They named Ju Manau (sacrifice Manau) , Kumran Manau (it is held to bless the family who moved to a new house or another land) , Sut Manau (a celebration of wealthiness and a thanksgiving festival) and Tsi Manau (to be cured from serious diseases). I have heard about this from my ancestors. Kumran Manau is danced to bless the siblings or relatives before they moved to another place. We celebrated Sut Manau for all of our brothers, sisters and relatives getting rich and to be able to spend the lives wealthily. When we celebrate Ju Manau, we killed many kinds of animals such as cow and pig and ate happily together. These are kinds of Manau which have been celebrated since our ancestors' time. We continue holding Manau festivals and dance it. And we created 'Chyaihku Manau', 'Hkranghku Manau', 'Sut Manau' and some other kinds of Manau too. Today, there is Hpaji Manau (Education) too. We, Kachin, started the revolution on 5 February. We celebrate Rawt Malan Manau on that day as a remembrance of revolutionary, and to honour the soldiers and ourselves. We keep dancing Manau dance till today. At some funerals, Sut Manau or Jinghku Manau (relatives) have been danced all day and night. Today, since our population has been raising and there are much more educated people in our Kachin ethnic groups, we can name any kind of Manau dance and can celebrate it. This is an epitome for us. This is how Manau dance had appeared.
