Title Matsan ai num kasha a lam (The poor girl) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I'm going to tell you about an orphan. Once upon a time, there was a married couple in a village. They had a daughter. Later, the mother died. Then the daughter became a motherless child. Her father remarried a woman. Her stepmother had a daughter, too. The stepmother was really mean to her. She fed her the only crust of cooked rice from the bottom of the pot. She also ordered her to do household chores. She and her own daughter ate all the cooked rice and never left any cooked rice for the girl. The girl was pitiful. Her own mother died with an unesay heart about her. Then her mother became a turtle in the village's stream. When the girl went to the field to work, she sat down beside the stream and cried out loud. She missed her dead mother and cried there. The turtle, which was her mother in the past life, came to her and asked her, "My little girl, why are you crying?" She answered, "I am crying because my mother is dead." Then the turtle said, "Oh, I am your mother. I feel so much pity for you, my daughter. So I become a turtle and watch you from here. I am your mother, my baby girl. Come and see me every day." The girl was happy because she could reunite with her mother. And she went back home. The next day, she did all her household chores and prepared to go to her mother. She packed a wrap of cooked rice for her mom, took a basket, and went into the forest. In the forest, she went to the stream. And she called, "Mom, I am here! Mom!" Then the turtle came to her and said, "My little girl, I am here. I am here." She said, "Mom, this is for you." She showed her mother the cooked rice and fed her. They met and talked to each other every day. The girl did every chore quickly and went to the market every day. And she packed cooked rice for her mother. She fed her mom every day. One day, her stepsister was curious about what she was doing every day. The stepsister became curious. She thought, "That girl quickly does household chores every morning and goes into the forest. What is she doing there?" Then she secretly followed her. She secretly followed her. When the girl arrived at the stream, she called, "Mom, I am here! Mom! Come and eat rice." The stepsister saw that the girl was throwing the cooked rice and feeding her mother. The stepsister went back home quickly and told her mother about everything she saw. She said, "Mom, my stepsister's mom is in the stream. Her mother is a turtle. She goes there, talks with her mother, and feeds her food every day." Then the stepmother knew that the first wife had become a turtle. The next day, she called every villager and said, "There is a turtle in that stream. Let's catch and eat it!" The girl heard her stepmother say to catch and eat her own mother. At night, she ran to her mother and told her about what she had heard. The villagers discussed, "Let's catch it from the upstream area." The girl heard everything and told her mother about it. She said, "Mom, the villagers know that you are here. They are going to catch and eat you tomorrow. They will catch you from the upstream area, so you go and stay in the downstream area." However, the turtle walked slowly and hid near the bush. The next day, the villagers came to the stream and prepared to catch the turtle. No matter how many times they searched for the turtle, they couldn't find it because it was hiding in the downstream area. The villagers said, "Let's find it in the downstream area tomorrow." The girl heard them say and ran to her mother. And she said, "Mom, they are going to search you in the downstream area tomorrow." Then, the turtle went to the middle of the stream and hid there. The next day, the villagers started searching for the turtle in the downstream area. But they couldn't find it. Then they discussed, "Let's find it in the middle of the stream tomorrow." There was almost no water because they had already bailed. While the turtle was hiding in the middle of the stream, where there was still some water, the girl came to her and said, "Mom, they are going to catch you tomorrow." Both of them were crying. The turtle said, "My daughter, I am tired of running and hiding from here to there. I will just be caught. But don't eat my meat. Take my bones and bury them in the backyard." The girl said, "Okay, Mom." The next day, she watched the villagers catch her mother. They were bailing all the water out of the stream when they caught the turtle. They took it back to the village and celebrated a big event. The turtle was so big, too. Then they all cooked it and ate it. The girl was just watching the villagers cook the turtle while crying. Her stepsister walked towards her and said, "Your mother is being cooked. Go and put some wood into the fire!" But the girl couldn't put wood in the fire. When she did it, her turtle mother shouted, "It's hot! It's hot!" Soon, the villagers cooked her mother's meat and ate it. They were eating the turtle meat on the table. After eating the meat, they threw the bones on the ground. The turtle told her daughter before she died, "Don't eat my meat. Collect all of my bones and bury them in the backyard." The girl remembered what her mom said. She picked up all the bones. She even grabbed the bones that the dogs were biting. She collected all of her mom's bones. She picked up all of her mother's bones and buried them in the backyard. After two or three days, a tree was growing there. There was an announcement, "The king is going to select his consort." The girl wanted to go there and joined in the selection event. But the stepmother ordered her to do many household chores. She said, "You can't go there!" And she continued, "Just work at home! Don't you dare go there!" The girl was depressed and upset. Then she went to the backyard where her mother's bones were buried and cried there. Suddenly, a woman appeared in front of her. The woman asked her, "Why are you crying?" She answered, "I want to go to the consort selection event. But I have lots of housework to do. I can't go there." The woman said, "Don't worry. Just close your eyes." And she did all of the housework in a blink of an eye. And then she shook the tree. At that time, the leaves fell down and turned into a beautiful dress. She gave it to the girl and said, "Here! Wear this dress." And she shook the tree one more time. Then, the fruits fell to the ground and turned into horses. And the branches turned into a pair of beautiful shoes. She told her, "Go there. You don't need to be afraid of anyone. The king will definitely choose you to be his consort." The woman did all of the housework for her. The girl went to the event. When she arrived there, the king liked her and selected her as his consort. They had a wedding there and lived happily ever after.
