Title U hte hkaipyek a lam (The chicken and the duck) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
I am going to tell you about the chickens and the ducks. Once upon a time, there were chickens and ducks living in the same village. One day, animals from the Sun Land invited them to dance Manau dance. The chickens and ducks were invited. They were invited too. Then, they wore the best costumes they had and went to the Sun Land to participate in the Manau festival. The ducks were slow at walking, so they were always behind. The chickens said to the ducks, "You guys are really slow." And they left them behind. The ducks said, "Wait for us! Let's go together. Wait!" But the chickens walked really fast and left them behind. Soon, they arrived at a stream, but they didn't know how to cross it. The chickens didn't know how to swim, so they were just standing beside the stream. The ducks told the chickens to wait for them, but the chickens didn't wait and left them behind by saying, "You guys are so slow." Now, the chickens didn't know what to do and were just walking along the stream. It was far to fly across the stream, and they couldn't swim either. At that time, the ducks arrived. They could swim very well. Then the chickens said to the ducks, "Are you here now? We are very sorry that we didn't wait for you. We don't know how to cross this stream. We are going to the Manau Festival too, so take us with you, please." The ducks said, "No, you didn't even wait for us earlier. Why should we help you cross the stream? We won't help you." The chickens said, "Please. We will do whatever you want us to do. Take us to the Manau Festival, please." Then, the ducks agreed and said, "Both of us lay eggs. You need to brood both of our eggs to hatch." The chickens said, "Okay, we will." The ducks helped the chickens cross the stream. The chickens were sitting on the ducks. All of them went to the Manau Festival. They participated in the festival happily. Till today, the ducks just laid eggs and didn't brood them. They lay eggs everywhere. People pick the eggs and put them in the chickens' nests. The chickens brood them for hatching.
