This story tells you if you are passionate about being rich, you will become rich one day. A long time ago, there lived a hereditary chief in a country. One day, he planned to visit the place of his parents-in-law with his wife. And he informed his in-laws that there would be an earthquake when he arrived there. The hereditary chief had got a big family with many children. One of them was quite smart and intelligent. His wife was called Lashi Num. The name was used to call the mistress at that time. And the girls who were given as presents were also named Lashi Num. She always nagged him to do something in order to get favor from high-ups. And she was curious whether her husband had already asked a favor or not. On the day they started the journey to in-laws' place, Lashi Num said, "Honey. Wear Lungtsin Hkanhpa necklace (it was made with meteoric stones)!" Then, the hereditary chief's younger brother said, "Don't wear it! If the people look at it, it will be powerless. So, I've already hidden it somewhere. And my brother promised me that I could get it when I turn 16." So, they brought a jade and started the journey. There lived a Chinese man in the village of the hereditary chief's in-laws. And he was a rogue. There was a troop as well. In the palace, the hereditary chief was less powerful than the Chinese man. So, the hereditary chief brought a valuable jade. He also didn't know the Chinese man was a rogue. And he trusted the Chinese man that he would help him to be promoted. So, the hereditary chief asked him to do a favor. At that time, the Chinese man also wanted to be promoted. The hereditary chief tried to get promoted and became the chief of his in-laws' land. When he reached the palace, he asked the Chinese man to offer his gift to the king. However, the poor hereditary chief was lied to by the Chinese man. Since the Chinese man became greedy when he saw the hereditary chief's valuable jade, he erased the name written on the gift and wrote his name. And both men went to the palace. The journey to the palace was not easy. They faced many difficulties, including fighting with the troops. The name of the Chinese man was Yangsin. As soon as Yangsin saw the gift of the hereditary chief, he knew that the chief would be promoted for sure. Therefore, Yangsin wrote down his name on the jade instead of the name of Jinghpaw man, the hereditary chief. The poor chief was dreaming that he would get more authority and become more powerful than before. However, there wasn't his name when the promoted person list was released. But the Chinese man was assigned for the position that he longed for. Humans are greedy, and the hereditary chief also had a selfish desire for wealth and power. Although his desire was strong, he had done the wrong action and had the erroneous belief that he would get the position if he offered the valuable jade. And the Chinese man tricked him. All your wishes wouldn't come true. The hereditary chief tried to get what he wanted in an unjust way. Therefore, he wasn't promoted. If he used his skills, he might get what he wished for. He relied on things instead of relying on his own skills.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,437 translations are currently available (November 23, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
