Title Nat ni kaji dwi hpe hpai ai lam (The old man carried by spirits) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Long time ago, there were a grandpa and his granddaughter in a village. One day, they went to another village which was far away from their village. They went there to meet their relatives. After meeting them, they went back home. Between those two villages, there were villages. They had to walk past the mountains and valleys. Then, the grandpa and his granddaughter went back to their village after meeting the relatives. It was already dark when they had just passed a mountain and they didn't reach at their village yet. So, they had to sleep there. The grandpa said, "My granddaughter, get up early tomorrow and cook breakfast for us." The next morning, he woke his granddaughter up while he was still in bed. He said, "Wake up, my granddaughter. Wake up! Cook the rice." She woke up when she heard her grandpa's voice. She cooked the rice. After that, she called him, "It's cooked. Wake up, grandpa." He replied to her, "I couldn't wake up yet. You eat first." So, she ate first. Then, the grandpa said, "I am not hungry. After you have finished eating, keep all of the dishes. We have to go back to our village." As her grandfather told, she ate the breakfast and kept the dishes. Then, she said, "I have finished, grandpa." Her grandfather said, "Then, come and open the blanket on my face." She did as her grandfather told her. She saw that there were no eyes on her grandpa's face Actually, her grandpa was already dead. The dead body was speaking. The dead body of her grandpa said, "Go back home. Don't look back! Don't even sneak, okay? No matter how noisy it is, you shouldn't look back. Go home straight." Then, she carried all the things and went back home. On her way back home, she heard a lot of noises that Nat spirits were making behind her. But she listened to her grandpa's words and didn't look back. She knew that if she looked back, she would die. So, she just kept going straight without looking back. When she was about to enter the village, she thought, "I am already in the village. It will be okay even if I look." Then, she sneaked a peek. She saw that there were many Nat spirits carrying her grandpa's dead body and making noises loudly. She was frightened and quickly went into a pit in her house. At that time, Nat spirits threw the grandpa's body in front of the house and disappeared.
