Title Yu shayi sha hte Yu shadang sha hkung ran ai lam (Marriage of the Rat) with English translation
Description Translation (Gun Mai)
Thank you very much for today's opportunity to meet with a friend who is coming from Japan, which is very far, and for getting a chance to talk and share about the traditional history of we, the Kachin people. Firstly, I also thank the grace of the God Also thanks to our brother/sister who managed to get this chance. I would like to say thanks word wtih respect first. I have prepared to tell a story. Firstly, I will briefly tell about the history of one of the things called Yu Nga Mayawn that we used to give when we ask for a bride, which is a practice that we have been applying until today in we Kachin people. Long long ago when the time there was no Yu Nga Mayawn practice among the Kachin people, a very beautiful little mouse was born in the palace of a mouse country. Because the little mouse girl was very beautiful, all of her family and relatives were proud of her. That's why they discussed and planned for their daughter mouse to just marry the strongest person in the world when she became an adult and they raised the little mouse girl. As they had been raising the little mouse girl, the mouse girl was also getting more beautiful and more popular. There were a lot of people from different countries who wanted to marry the beautiful mouse girl and asked to marry but as they planned, they just wanted the beautiful mouse girl to marry the strongest person in the world. So, they announced so. But, there was no one met with their criteria so the beautiful mouse girl was getting older and felt depressed. Then, the mouse girl said to her father, the king that "Father, since your announcement and plan do not work for me, I, myself will make effort to get the thing done. Therefore, please give me the permission to let me try myself." "Yes, I also don't know how to do anymore so I allow you," the king said and permitted his daughter. Then, the mouse girl went first to the sun as she thought that the sun would be the strongest person in the world. She thought why the sun would be the strongest person was because they felt very hot and not happy when the sun was shine. So, she went to the little sun boy first. When she got to the sun boy, the sun boy asked that "Dear little mouse girl, why are you coming to me?" "Dear little handsome sun boy, because I believe that you are the strongest person in the world, I come to you with my beautiful appearance to marry you," the little mouse girl said. The sun boy then said to the little mouse girl that "Little mouse girl, what you said is correct some but some are not correct. What I said some are correct mean that when I make sunshine, I can make the world too hot. But, there is someone stronger than me." The little mouse girl was amazed to hear and said that "Who is that? I thought that you are the strongest person in the world. Who is the one stronger than you?" The sun boy then answered that "Look at over there. Do you see the clouds are coming? I think that I am making the hottest sun but when the clouds cover me, all my hot and bright powers have gone." Then, the little mouse girl said that "So, there is someone who can defeat you. Right?" "Yes, go to the cloud. I think the cloud will match you," the sun boy said. The little mouse girl immediately went to the cloud. When she met the cloud boy, the little mouse girl said that "Dear cloud boy, I heard that you are stronger than the sun boy. Thus, I come to you to serve my life." The cloud boy then said that "Yes, what you said is correct. I can defeat the sun. But, even though I can cover the sun with my power, it doesn't last long. There is someone who is stronger than me." Then, the little mouse girl asked who was that. The cloud boy answered that "Look at now. I am covering the sun but when the wind blows me, I will be spread away." "Really? So, the wind is stronger than you?" the little mouse girl said. "Yes, the wind is stronger than me. Go to the wind." said the wind boy. Then, the little mouse went to the wind and said that "Dear wind, I was told that you can defeat the cloud who could defeat the sun so I think you are the strongest in the world." The wind boy then said that "No, it is not. What you said is also correct. I thought I am very strong and even though I can blow away everything including trees, there is someone who is still standing no matter how much I blow. Although I blow with my full strength, that one is even not shaken." "So, who is such a strong person?" the little mouse girl asked. The wind boy answered that "Look over there, you see the mountain? Even though I blow with my mighty strength, the mountains are just still sitting like nothing happen to him. They are stronger than me. Go to the mountain. I think the mountain will match with you." Then, the little mouse girl immediately went to the mountain boy and said that "Dear mountain boy, I was told that you are very strong so I come to you with trust. I am the most beautiful girl in the mouse country. I want to give all my beautiful appearance to the strongest person in the world so I come to you. When I looking for the strongest person, I already met with the sun but he said that he was not the strongest person. I also already met with the wind and the cloud but they also said that they are not the strongest person. And, I was told that you are the strongest person so I came to you." "Dear little girl, some of what you said are correct but some are not," the mountain boy said. "Why is it?" the little mouse girl asked. The mountain boy then said that "My overall appearance looks handsome and good but if you can enter my inside and look, there is someone who is making holes and tunnels inside my body. Even though I thought that I am the strongest person, they are the ones who is stronger than me because they can even ransack my meat. They are stronger than me." Then, as the little mouse girl was curious to know who was that so when she entered inside the mountain, she saw that many mice, her type, were making holes and tunnels inside the body of the mountain. She then said to herself that "I thought that others are the strongest persons but we mice are the one who is the strongest. I was wrong." And, she said to her father that "Father, I was wrong. I was looking for the strongest person from other types but I see now that we, mice, are the strongest one." The father said to her daughter that "Daughter, not yet. What you are thinking is still something wrong." "Why is it, father," the daughter asked. The father said that "Why we are living inside this mountain safely is because there are others who are stronger than us." When the father said so, the little mouse girl was amazed. "Father, I thought that we are living here as we want to live here. Isn't it?" the little mouse girl asked her father. The father said that "No, we are hiding and living here to avoid the threat of those who want to kill us and who don't like us." The daughter asked that "Who are they?" The father answered that "They are with two feet and their appearance is also different with us. They are called humans. They are very strong and it seems they can do whatever. Even we thought that this mountain is the safest place for us but they can do it upside down this mountain. Although we are making holes and tunnels in this mountain for years, they can destroy easily this mountain. They can also cut easily the trees. They are called humans who have a lot of knowledge and skills." The little mouse girl then was amazed. "What kind of person is the human? Let me see them," the little mouse girl said to herself and went to meet the human. Then, she saw the humans who were doing everything well so she was very amazed. "We cannot do such things. But, these humans are doing such wonderful things. I think the person who I expect to marry is the human," the little mouse girl said to herself and was very happy. So, she talked to a human boy who she met first that "Dear human boy, I am a mouse princess, the daughter of the mouse king. I am the most beautiful girl in the mouse country. With my beautiful appearance, I am looking for the one to marry the person who is the strongest, the smartest in the world until today. I finally found and understood that you, humans are the ones that I expect to marry. Thus, if you are willing, I would like to give my beautiful appearance to you, a Kachin boy. Would that be possible?" The boy was amazed then and said that "I accept what you said because I am the one who knows more and you can do more than the others who you knew. Because I can also defeat you. I can also do with other strategies and skills that you can't see. That's why what you trust might not be wrong. If you satisfy, I don't have any rejection." "OK, thank you very much for accepting. To marry me from today, please come to my father and asked for a bride as per traditional terms," the little mouse girl said. "How do you do?" the boy asked. The little mouse girl said that "We used to pay to asked for a bribe." So, the boy asked for the little mouse girl as per traditional procedures and married and they lived happily. From that day, we Kachin people had been using Yu Nga Mayawn as a valuable term. Thank you very much.
