Title Wamin language workshop
Description Markos Koumoulas, David Bindi Hudson (Ewamian/Western Yalanji), David’s daughter and artist, Jedess Hudson (Ewamian/Western Yalanji), and linguist, Cassy Nancarrow, meet at Cassy’s home in Kuranda, Queensland on Sep. 1, 2022, to review Wamin vocabulary and grammar. Much of the conversation explores a number of approaches for describing specific characteristics of local flora and fauna on Ewamian Country. Subsequently, new words and expressions are constructed. Four song stories are evaluated in preparation for recording later in the month.

Description For the completion of Markos Koumoulas’ Ph.D. dissertation, “The Ancient Voice of the Future: Reawakening Ewamian Song and Language” (forthcoming, 2025), and in collaboration with world-renowned Ewamian and Western Yalanji didjeridu player, David Bindi Hudson, this archive presents a collection of fieldwork materials in the Cairns region from March 2022 to March 2023. The aim of this research project is the revitalization of the Wamin (Ewamian) language through song. The first component of this project is the creation and recording of new Ewamian 'classical' Aboriginal music. Secondly, is the development of an Ewamian-based didjeridu notation derived from Ewamian cultural symbology and rock art to help facilitate the documentation of Ewamian music and language.
